A comfortable 3-day Macau itinerary with parents: Ruins of St Paul's without the rush

Three unhurried days: the historic centre with the St Paul's steps bypassed (escalator to Mount Fortress, museum free for 65+), A-Ma Temple and the flat Cotai resorts by LRT, then Coloane village. Real prices, real step counts, midday rest built in.

Macau rewards slow travel. The historic centre is compact, the resorts are flat and air-conditioned, and the one famous staircase - the 68 stone steps up to the Ruins of St Paul's facade - can be bypassed entirely. This three-day plan keeps every day to two clusters with a proper midday break, the way parents actually enjoy a trip. Prices are from official Macau government and museum sources, checked 31 October 2026.

Day 1: the historic centre, steps optional

Start late morning at Senado Square - flat, tiled, and ringed with benches - and wander the Leal Senado building and St Dominic's Church at street level. From the square it is a gentle five-minute slope up Rua de Sao Paulo to the Ruins. Here is the part most guides miss: do not climb the 68 front steps with parents. The viewing garden to the right of the facade gives the classic photograph from ground level, and an escalator at the base (about two minutes) carries everyone up into the Macau Museum and out onto Mount Fortress - the best view over the old town with cannons and flat ramparts, all free. The museum itself is worth an hour: MOP 15 for adults and free for seniors 65 and over (macaumuseum.gov.mo); it is open 10:00-18:00, closed Mondays, last entry 17:30, and free for everyone on Tuesdays and the 15th of each month. Lunch in the lanes around the square, hotel rest in the afternoon, then an easy evening stroll when the day-trippers leave.

Day 2: A-Ma Temple and the flat side of Cotai

Morning taxi to A-Ma Temple in Barra, Macau's oldest temple. The lower courtyard is flat and atmospheric; the upper prayer halls involve stone steps, so parents can comfortably enjoy the main level while anyone keen climbs higher. From Barra the LRT now runs the length of Taipa and Cotai for at most MOP 12 a trip (mlm.com.mo) - a clean, step-free ride with a view. Spend midday inside the Venetian or another Cotai resort: genuinely flat, seated cafes, accessible toilets everywhere, and no pressure to gamble. After the hotel rest, an early evening loop of Taipa Village: Rua do Cunha is a short, gentle food street for almond cookies and pork chop buns, best before the dinner crowd.

Day 3: Coloane, the Macau that naps

Coloane village is Macau's exhale - a flat waterfront lane of pastel houses, the small Chapel of St Francis Xavier, and Lord Stow's original egg tarts, warm from the oven at MOP 12-15 each. Two hours here at bench pace is the whole plan, and that is enough. On the way back, the free Wynn Palace SkyCab cable car glides over the Performance Lake with step-free boarding - a ride parents love precisely because it asks nothing of their knees. Practical notes: a taxi from the Peninsula to Coloane runs roughly MOP 100-120 on the official meter (MOP 21 flagfall plus MOP 2 per 220 m, dsat.gov.mo), and the free casino shuttles cover most hotel-area hops. Getting into Macau and between terminals is covered in our Hong Kong to Macau routes guide and the ferry terminal transport guide.

Questions on this article

asked by readers, answered by us

Do seniors get discounts at Macau attractions?

Often yes. The Macau Museum is free for seniors 65 and over (adults MOP 15, per macaumuseum.gov.mo), the Mount Fortress grounds are free for everyone, and LRT fares top out at MOP 12. The museum is closed Mondays; entry is free for all on Tuesdays and the 15th of each month.

How do I reach the Ruins of St Paul without climbing steps?

The facade has 68 stone steps, but there are two easy options: the viewing garden to the right of the facade gives the classic photograph from ground level, and an escalator at the base (about two minutes) carries you up to the Macau Museum and Mount Fortress - the best old-town view without a single step.

Where should parents stay in Macau?

If they love historic lanes, stay on the Peninsula near Senado Square - everything is a short taxi ride. For flat, step-free comfort, the big Cotai resorts have lifts, seating, accessible toilets everywhere, and free shuttles from the ferry terminals. Either way, split each day into two clusters with a midday rest.
