Queenstown sells adrenaline - bungy, jet boats, paragliding - but underneath it sits one of the world's great gentle-holiday towns: a lake, a mountain backdrop, and views you can reach sitting down. Three days with parents is the right length. Here is the comfortable version.
Day 1: The Skyline Gondola and the big view
Morning up the Skyline Gondola: a return ride is NZ$69 for adults and NZ$48 for children (2026 prices), lifting you 450 metres to Bob's Peak for the panorama over Lake Wakatipu and The Remarkables - Queenstown's postcard, achieved with zero walking. The base station is a short but genuinely steep uphill walk from the town centre on Brecon Street; with parents, take a taxi or Uber up (a few dollars) and save knees for the top. Have coffee at the summit cafe, skip the luge unless the grandchildren are along, and be back in town for a rest. Evening: an early dinner and a flat waterfront stroll - sunset on the lake is free and better than most paid views. The Stratosfare dinner buffet at the top (combo about NZ$162) is the splurge version of the same evening.
Day 2: The TSS Earnslaw and the gardens
Morning on the 1912 steamship TSS Earnslaw: the 90-minute return cruise on Lake Wakatipu starts from NZ$115 per adult (RealNZ published from-prices) and everyone stays seated - the most senior-friendly big experience in town. Walter Peak farm extensions (NZ$129 and up) add a high-country station visit with a lakeside BBQ lunch if you want a longer outing. Afternoon: Queenstown Gardens - free, flat, shaded paths through mature trees to the lake's edge, with benches every few minutes - then tea back in town. Note the Fergburger queue for the famous burger: it can run 30-45 minutes at peak; go at off-hours or pick one of the many quieter cafes on the mall.
Day 3: Arrowtown, the gentle gold rush
Half a day in Arrowtown, 20 minutes away (Orbus bus, NZ$2.50 with a Bee Card): a preserved gold-rush main street that is flat, short and lined with cafes, plus the old Chinese settlement down by the river on easy paths. It is the perfect parents' morning - history, flat walking, good coffee - and you are back in Queenstown for a lakeside afternoon. If anyone wants a wine stop, Gibbston valley wineries do seated tastings with platters, no driving pressure on anyone if you book a shuttle.
Practical notes for parents
Queenstown town centre is compact but hilly in parts - base yourselves near the waterfront for the flattest walking. Summer days (December-March) are mild, averaging 18-22C, but evenings cool fast: carry a layer even in January. Book the gondola and Earnslaw a day or two ahead in peak season, and keep one flexible afternoon - mountain weather changes plans, and the flexibility is the point of a slow trip.
