Varanasi with parents works if you pick fewer things and sit down between them. The ghats are riverfront steps, the lanes are crowded, and the big evening event is fixed at sunset. Plan around those and add rest.
1. What is fixed
- Ganga Aarti: Incredible India says the evening aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat lasts around 45 minutes and starts after sunset, at 6.30 PM in summer and 7 PM in winter.
- Sarnath Museum: 10 AM to 5 PM and closed on Fridays, per Incredible India.
- Dhamekh Stupa: sunrise to sunset, per Incredible India.
- Distance: Sarnath is 10 km north-east of Varanasi, per the district website.
2. The three days
Day 1: arrive, check in, rest. Go to the evening aarti only if everyone is fresh. Arrive early to find a place, and plan the way back before it ends.
Day 2: the district website calls the ghats' 6 km sweep best viewed at dawn, and says boats are available for hire from Dashashwamedh Ghat. Take a short morning boat ride, then go back to the hotel to rest. Do Sarnath after lunch if it is not a Friday, since the museum is shut then.
Day 3: a slow morning, local shopping near the hotel, then depart.
3. What to check about access
The district website says the ghats are riverfront steps and that the old city has one-way lanes where autos and big vehicles are barred. We found no official list of step-free routes, seating or boat boarding aids at the aarti or the ghats. Ask your hotel and boat operator:
- How many steps are there from the lane to the boat or the viewing spot?
- Can parents sit for the aarti, and where?
- Where does the taxi drop us, and how far is the walk?
4. Shorter walks, more breaks
Pick a hotel near the ghats so you can return mid-day. Keep the Sarnath trip to one stop. The goal is two small outings a day, not five.
5. Confirm on the day
Aarti timings move with sunset and with festivals, so check the day before.
