AI illustration: a fictional family waits in a generic station forecourt. This is not a real station exit, pickup bay or access map.
At a large railway station, “I am outside” does not finish the pickup handoff. Confirm where the family is waiting, where the booked vehicle can legally stop and how to identify the right driver. This is a coordination routine using Uber as a named operator example, not a station-specific gate guide or a promise that a cab can reach every exit.
Agree one meeting point, not two moving targets
Our editorial suggestion is to keep the family together in a suitable waiting place while one person confirms the meeting point. Read the actual exit sign or ask railway staff which exit you have reached. Tell the driver that exact information rather than guessing from a station name in the booking.
For an app ride, Uber India’s pickup-spots page says its app suggests pickup locations and flags restricted or illegal pickup zones. It also explains that a pickup pin can be moved and confirmed. Use the current app and station instructions together; a pin on the map does not establish vehicle access, a step-free route or permission to stop there.
If a parent cannot manage the route to the suggested point, ask railway staff about a usable exit or assistance and tell the driver before moving. Do not send one traveller ahead with all the luggage while another is still trying to find the exit. No porter, lift or vehicle-at-platform service is guaranteed here.
Send a short, specific update
Uber’s US pickup-notes guide describes sending a note such as where you are or what you are wearing. It is a feature example, not a promise of the same interface in every Indian app version. Use the contact option actually offered in your booking.
Our suggested message is: “We are waiting at [exact signed exit or agreed point]. We have [bag count]. Please confirm the permitted pickup point before we move.” Replace the brackets from what you can see and verify. A clothing description can help the meeting, but it does not prove a driver's identity.
If you are using a prebooked hotel transfer instead, use the contact details in that confirmed booking. Ask that operator to confirm its own vehicle, driver and meeting process. The Uber instructions below do not establish the rules of another operator.
Match the vehicle before loading bags
Uber Help’s driver-and-vehicle guide says the app shows the driver photo and vehicle make, model and registration number. It directs riders to match the registration displayed in the app with the actual vehicle. Uber’s general ride guide also says to match the plate, vehicle and driver photo and not enter when the vehicle or driver identity differs from the app. That general page warns that features can vary by country, region or city.
Take time for the match before loading the family’s bags. A car arriving near your pin or a person knowing the station name is not the same check. If details do not match, stay out and use the booking’s support route to clarify. Do not quietly replace the booked ride with an unverified offer.
If the driver and family are on different sides
Stop moving long enough to agree one correction. Ask station staff for the permitted pedestrian route and ask the driver whether the vehicle can reach the newly agreed point. Do not cross tracks, walk through a restricted area or take an unmanageable staircase to chase a moving car.
Uber’s pickup-spots page describes changing the pickup location rather than cancelling solely to move the pin. It does not promise that a driver can wait indefinitely or that changing the point is free. Check any fare, waiting or cancellation terms shown for the actual booking before choosing the next step.
Keep a fallback that does not depend on a live map
Our editorial backup is to save the transfer reference, operator contact and hotel address privately before arrival. Agree what the family will do if calls or data stop working, such as asking at a staffed enquiry point for help identifying the agreed exit. A saved screenshot of live location is not a current fix.
Before departure, count people and bags, then confirm the destination with the verified driver. This routine reduces ambiguity; it does not guarantee a particular pickup time, price, vehicle size or station access.
