Pack a small set of things the traveller may need before a checked suitcase returns. This is a packing guide, not a guarantee that every seat has under-seat storage or that cabin crew will lift another bag. Confirm your airline’s size, weight and item-count rules first.

Start with documents and a way to contact help

Keep the valid travel documents, current boarding pass or required confirmation, booking details and a short contact note accessible. Use a secure pouch rather than exposing passport numbers on an outer label. Do not put original documents or a needed contact plan inside a checked suitcase.

Keep prescribed medicines identifiable

Carry the traveller’s regular medicines and the relevant prescription or clinician-reviewed medical summary. CDC’s travel-health-kit guidance includes diagnoses, generic medication names and allergies in the medical summary. Do not change doses or create a treatment plan while packing. Check destination restrictions and any liquid or temperature requirements separately; being prescribed does not automatically resolve every border or screening rule.

Choose small comfort items the person actually uses

Consider glasses in their case, tissues, a light layer and the traveller’s usual safe snack if permitted. Ask the person what they need rather than packing an entire family’s supplies into their bag. Keep liquids compliant with the applicable screening rules, and do not assume a large water bottle can be taken through security.

Separate battery safety from convenience

Check the carrier’s current power-bank and spare-battery policy before packing a charger. IndiGo requires power banks and spare loose lithium batteries in hand baggage within personal reach, not overhead or checked baggage. Other carriers can have their own detailed limits. Do not pack a device with an unknown or prohibited battery simply because it fits into a small pocket.

Make the contents easy to find

Use a few clearly organised pouches and practise finding the pass, glasses and medicines without emptying the bag. Keep fasteners manageable for the traveller. The bag still has to stow properly without blocking an aisle or exit. Ask crew about any seat-specific restriction rather than treating “under-seat” as a universal place for every item.

Review again if a cabin bag is taken away

If the airline requires another bag to be checked, move permitted essentials and required battery items before handover under staff instructions. Keep the remaining cabin items within the allowed count and limits. The separate lifting guide covers handling arrangements; do not add a second oversized bag as a workaround.

Quick questions

Does this list create an extra baggage allowance? No. Confirm the booking’s item count and limits.

Should packing change medicine doses? No. Follow the traveller’s clinician’s instructions.

Is every seat suitable for under-seat storage? Do not assume it; check the actual seat and crew instructions.
