A slower walker on a group tour: ask how the group handles the pace
An escort’s presence does not tell you what happens when one traveller needs a slower pace. Ask the organiser for a practical plan before committing to the group.

Separate tour leadership from walking support
A tour leader may be managing tickets, timings and the whole group. Ask who remains with a slower walker, whether this is included, and what happens when the group moves on. Trip Keeper’s existing guide to who is in charge explains the broader escort handoff; this article tests the walking-pace arrangement inside that handoff.
Ask for the hardest ordinary day
Request the longest walking section, stairs, uneven surfaces, standing queues and vehicle access for the actual itinerary. Ask whether those are estimates or checked route details. “Leisurely” and “senior-friendly” are descriptions, not a distance, a step-free route or an agreed staff duty.
Get a workable rejoining plan
If a traveller skips a stop, ask where they wait, whether seating and toilets are available, who stays with them and how they rejoin the right vehicle. A café is not a confirmed waiting base just because it appears on a map. Do not assume the bus can remain parked near every entrance.
Make opt-outs and costs explicit
Ask whether transport, a companion or an alternative visit costs extra, and what is lost if a prepaid activity is skipped. Record the organiser’s written answer, then discuss it with the traveller. A person should not have to hurry in pain to avoid holding up the coach.
Choose a different format if the answer is vague
If the fixed pace cannot fit the traveller, compare a smaller/private arrangement or a shorter itinerary. No group size alone guarantees attention. Keep the traveller involved in that choice rather than deciding that they must stay behind every day.
Questions before you travel
Does an escort guarantee individual walking support?
No. Ask who provides it, when and under which conditions.
Is “senior-friendly” enough detail?
No. Ask for actual walking sections, stairs, waits and rejoining arrangements.
Should the traveller be told to keep up?
Choose an itinerary and support plan that fit them rather than relying on pressure.
