Sources checked: 28 October 2026. Emirates is the named operator example; confirm every flight and booking.
A toddler's first flight needs a different booking check from a lap infant's journey. Start with the child's age on every flight, their own seat where required, and the adult sitting beside them. The examples here use Emirates policies for a family departing India on an Emirates itinerary. They are not rules for every airline, and a connecting flight operated by another carrier needs its own check.
Booking checklist: age and seat on every flight
Write down the child's date of birth and the date of each outward, connecting and return flight. Emirates lists a child fare for children aged 2–11 travelling in a separate seat. Do not assume a child who is under two on departure can remain booked as a lap infant after their second birthday. Emirates: child and infant fares.
Emirates says an outward journey as an infant followed by onward or return travel as a child uses the applicable infant fare outward and child fare onward or back. That booking cannot be made online: contact the local Emirates office. If plans change after travel starts and the infant turns two, Emirates says the unused coupons will be reissued at the applicable child fare and seats booked for remaining flights. Confirm the actual ticket change and cost before travelling; this is not a quoted fare. Emirates: current operator guidance.
Our suggested booking checklist: correct name and date of birth; age on each flight; confirmed infant or child category on each sector; an own seat where required; and the actual operating airline for every connection. Check passport, visa and any consent requirements for the child's nationality and destination separately. A paid seat does not settle entry documents.
Seating checklist: confirm the adult-child arrangement
Emirates says children under 13 are guaranteed a seat next to an accompanying adult, while its broader aim to seat a whole family together can depend on availability and requirements. Do not turn the adult-child rule into a promise that both parents, siblings and grandparents will all sit in one row. Emirates: current operator guidance.
Check the actual seat assignment for each flight. If your booking or aircraft changes, ask the airline to check the adult-child arrangement again. Keep the child's booking and the responsible adult's booking available together when asking for help.
Equipment checklist: do not assume a toddler gets a bassinet
Emirates says a bassinet cannot be requested when a normal seat has been booked at a child fare. Its bassinets are limited and subject to safe fit and availability. A toddler's own-seat plan should not depend on receiving an infant bassinet. Emirates: current operator guidance.
Our equipment question: if you plan to bring a child restraint, send the operating airline the exact model and ask it to confirm acceptance for the child's age, size, aircraft seat and cabin before travel. Do not use this guide as an installation instruction. Emirates' ticketing FAQ describes car-seat conditions separately; this article does not decide a device's suitability or provide installation instructions. Its infant-family page says it does not provide child restraint devices on board. Emirates: equipment and infant seating.
Before check-in: keep one confirmed plan for each flight
Our suggested final list: the child's name and date of birth; age and fare category on each sector; the confirmed seat where required; the accompanying adult's seat; and any equipment acceptance obtained from the operating airline. Recheck the affected rows after a date, aircraft or booking change. These are preparation questions, not extra baggage, a whole-family seating promise or entry permission.
Airport and boarding checklist: carry the confirmed plan
Have the child's travel document, booking details, seat assignment and any agreed equipment arrangements ready. At check-in, raise an unresolved seat or device issue before reaching the gate. Follow current security and crew instructions rather than treating an illustration or a preparation list as permission to use equipment.
This checklist is about a toddler's booking and own-seat plan, including a second birthday during the journey. It does not cover lap-infant feeding, bottle cleaning, stroller handoffs, security-screening procedures or medical advice. Prepare those separately for the actual child and route.

Quick questions
Can a child stay on an infant ticket after turning two during the trip?
Do not assume so. Emirates says infant-outward/child-onward journeys need sector-specific fares through its local office, not an online booking. Changed plans after travel begins can require remaining coupons to be reissued at child fare and seats booked.
Will Emirates seat the whole family in one row?
Its published guarantee is a child under 13 beside an accompanying adult. That is not a promise to seat an entire extended family in one row.
Does booking a child seat include a bassinet or car seat?
No. Emirates says no bassinet request with a normal child-fare seat, and it does not provide child restraint devices on board. Verify any device with the operating airline before travel.
