Already left India without travel insurance? Ask about eligibility before buying

Do not assume a website that accepts a premium has accepted a trip that already started. Ask the insurer about your actual departure, location and start date before you buy.

AI illustration: Fictional traveller abroad asks an insurer about eligibility before purchasing. Fictional scene, not an actual location, person or service.

The direct answer is product-specific

TATA AIG’s travel-insurance FAQ says you cannot buy its travel insurance after departure and must be in India when purchasing. That is an insurer’s stated restriction, not proof that every policy worldwide has the same rule. Do not buy that product using a future departure date when you have already left.

Tell the insurer the whole starting position

State the date you left India, current country, residency, age, planned return date and all countries still to visit. Say whether this is a first purchase or an extension of an existing policy. Ask explicitly whether the exact product accepts an already-started trip and request the response in writing from the insurer, with the product name.

Ask when cover would actually start

If an insurer offers an eligible product, ask about its effective time and timezone, any waiting period, exclusions for an event or symptom that has already happened, and benefits unavailable after departure. A new purchase should not be treated as retrospective protection. Check the final schedule against the written answer before relying on it.

An extension is a different question

Someone with an active policy should contact that insurer about extension conditions before expiry. An extension request is not acceptance, and a new policy is not automatically continuous with the old one. Ask how the proposed dates and any intervening event are handled; keep the written confirmation and revised schedule if issued.

If a broker page disagrees, stop at the conflict

A broad advertisement for post-departure insurance does not override a named insurer’s eligibility restriction. Ask which insurer and product will actually issue cover for your disclosed circumstances. If the written insurer answer remains unclear, do not rely on the quote as valid protection. For an existing emergency, seek local care and contact any current assistance provider; do not delay care waiting for a new policy to cover it.

Questions before you travel

Can I change my departure date to make a quote work?

No. Give the real departure and ask whether the product accepts it.

Does payment prove post-departure eligibility?

No. Obtain the insurer’s written acceptance of your actual circumstances and check the issued schedule.

Is extending a current policy the same as a first purchase?

No. Ask the existing insurer about its own extension conditions before expiry.
