Arriving at Katra station: finish the registration and base handoff first
Arriving by train is not the same as being ready to start the Vaishno Devi yatra. Use the Shrine Board’s registration route, settle luggage and confirm where your onward vehicle will leave you.

Confirm the station and the first stop
Check that the train arrives at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, not Jammu Tawi or another station. Decide whether you go first to your hotel or accommodation, the official registration point or the planned yatra starting area. Give a driver the exact place; “Vaishno Devi” is not a single road drop-off all the way to the shrine.
Use the Board’s registration, not an agent’s slip
The Shrine Board says all pilgrims must register and the registration process is free. Its online portal tells online registrants to collect an RFID yatra access card before beginning the yatra by showing the booking slip. It lists Katra railway station among collection points, along with other authorised locations. Check the current counter availability on arrival; an online acknowledgement alone should not be treated as the collected card.
Check the timing attached to the card
The Board’s registration page says pilgrims must cross the first Banganga check post within six hours of card issue or obtain a fresh card. Do not collect the card and then plan an unexamined long sleep or outing. Confirm the current instruction at the counter and arrange rest before the appropriate registration/start window if needed.
Settle bags and the actual onward handoff
Ask your accommodation about luggage storage, access and check-in rather than assuming every station or hotel offers a free cloakroom. Confirm the vehicle, passengers, bags, drop-off and any walking after it. If the traveller needs assistance, ask which service covers that segment; a station pickup is not a promise of assistance along the yatra route.
Do not confuse the base with a booked service
The Board says it has not authorised private travel agents to book its services and directs users to the official site. Accommodation, helicopter or other services need their own confirmed booking and conditions. This arrival guide does not establish route openings, queues, weather fitness or a guaranteed darshan time. Ask the Board for current travel instructions before setting out.
Questions before you travel
Is the train ticket my yatra registration?
No. Follow the Shrine Board’s registration and RFID instructions.
Can an online registrant skip collecting the card?
The cited portal tells online registrants to collect the RFID card with their online slip before the yatra.
Does a station taxi booking include the whole pilgrimage?
No. Confirm the exact drop-off and every later service separately.
