Yes, Bali works well for parents in their 60s and 70s, if you go in the dry season and keep the plan slow. Go between April and October, split the stay between a beach area and Ubud, do one main thing a day, and use a car and driver instead of scooters or packed tour buses.
Is Bali good for older parents?
Honestly, yes, with the usual caveats about heat and walking.
The good part is the pace. Bali is built for slow holidays: beach resorts with flat paths, pools, spas, and long lunches. Parents who do not enjoy rushing between monuments tend to relax here. The island is also used to tourists, so English works in hotels, restaurants and shops in the main areas.
The caveats are the heat and the humidity, and uneven footpaths outside resorts. Indonesia's tourism board says coastal areas average about 28 degrees with humidity of 70 to 90 percent, and that stays fairly constant all year. So the plan is not about escaping heat, it is about planning around it: out in the morning, rest after lunch, easy evenings.
Best months to go
Per Indonesia Tourism, the dry season from April to October is the usual best time for Bali, and the wet season runs from November to March. Dry season means less rain on beach days and easier driving on day trips.
One honest note: the same source says the seasons have become less predictable, so check the forecast close to travel and keep one indoor plan for each day. We have written this up, with the sources, in our best time to visit Bali guide.
A slow 6-day plan
This is the shape we like for parents: two bases, one highlight a day, and a rest window after lunch.
- Day 1, arrive and do nothing. Check in at the beach side (Kuta or the quieter resort areas nearby), an early dinner, bed. Do not plan anything else.
- Day 2, an easy beach morning. A slow breakfast, a short walk on the sand, and the afternoon by the pool. A first day of nothing is what makes the rest of the trip work.
- Day 3, a half day out. A temple visit in the cooler morning hours, back by lunch. Long afternoons are where older travellers tire, so we keep touring to the mornings.
- Day 4, move to Ubud. Check in, walk the main street and the market, early dinner. Ubud is greener and a little cooler than the coast.
- Day 5, rice terraces and a village morning. Start early, finish by lunch, rest in the afternoon. If anyone wants a spa evening, this is the day.
- Day 6, a slow morning and the flight home. No sightseeing on the last day.
Two rules we follow everywhere with parents: one main activity a day, and a car with a driver for every outing. Scooters are how young travellers get around Bali; they are not how we move parents.
Money and small practical things
Indonesia uses the rupiah, and by law transactions are conducted in rupiah. Indonesia Tourism says Visa and Mastercard are the most widely accepted cards in the main tourist areas, but you should carry cash for smaller towns, markets and remote places. ATMs on the Plus, Cirrus and Alto networks are common in tourist areas. If you carry more than IDR 100,000,000 in cash or the equivalent, you must declare it when entering or leaving. The details, with sources, are in our Bali travel essentials guide.
On food: if vegetarian or Jain meals matter to your parents, tell the hotel or operator when you book and ask them to confirm what they can arrange. Do not assume availability on the day.
On visas: Indians need to arrange one before or on arrival, depending on the current rules. Our Bali visa guide for Indians has the current position, checked against official sources.
What this costs
To give you a real idea: our Bali trips on the site right now start at Rs 70,560 per person for a 6 night Kuta and Ubud trip from Delhi with flights, and Rs 71,000 to 73,000 for the land packages. Prices move with dates and seats, so treat these as a guide, not a quote.
