Why this route is weird: Bangkok to Koh Samui is about 700 km with no bridge at the end. Every option finishes either by flying into Samui Airport (USM) - which Bangkok Airways owns and is effectively the only airline allowed to use - or by crossing from Donsak pier on the Surat Thani coast by ferry. That monopoly shapes every price on this page.
Option 1: The direct flight (BKK to USM)
Bangkok Airways flies Suvarnabhumi to Samui in about 1 hour 10 minutes, with anywhere from 6 to 20 departures a day depending on season (some seats are sold under a Thai Airways code - same planes). One-way fares run ฿2,000-6,600; for November dates, current checks show ฿2,700-3,900 typical. It is full service - lounge access, 20 kg checked bag, meal - which softens but does not remove the fact that the same money flies Bangkok to Singapore and back. Book it when: your holiday is short, you are landing in Bangkok and connecting the same day, or you are travelling with elders or small children and the two-transfer alternative is not worth the saving.
Option 2: The Surat Thani backdoor (the classic money-saver)
Fly a budget airline - AirAsia, Nok Air or Thai VietJet - from Don Mueang (DMK) to Surat Thani (URT), about 1 hour 10 minutes and often ฿1,000-2,000 booked ahead. From there a bus or van runs about 1.5 hours to Donsak pier, then a ferry (Raja, Seatran or Lomprayah) about 1.5 hours to Samui. Total: roughly 4.5-6 hours door to pier to beach, at a combined ฿1,400-2,500 depending on how far ahead you book. Book the flight and the bus-ferry as one through-ticket where possible (the airlines and 12Go sell combined versions); the single ticket means a delayed flight does not strand you between pier and island. The catch: the last useful ferries leave Donsak by early evening - an afternoon flight into URT can mean an unplanned Surat Thani night. Aim to land at URT by mid-afternoon at the latest.
Option 3: The overnight sleeper train + ferry
The romantic choice, and a genuinely comfortable one: an evening sleeper from Bangkok (trains now leave from Krung Thep Aphiwat station) to Surat Thani, 11-12 hours overnight, then a bus to Donsak and the morning ferry. Combined train+bus+ferry packages run around ฿1,300-1,800 in a second-class sleeper, and you arrive at your Samui hotel in time for a late lunch having spent nothing on a hotel night. Book it when: the journey is part of the trip, or when December-April flight prices spike. Book sleepers weeks ahead in high season - the good lower berths sell out.
Option 4: The direct bus + ferry (cheapest, longest)
Combined bus-and-ferry tickets from Bangkok (Khao San area operators plus the government bus from the Southern Terminal) run 10-12 hours and start around ฿900-1,500 - 12Go lists fares from about ฿881 (October 2026). Most run overnight, arriving via the morning ferry. It is the least comfortable option by a distance, but it is the floor on price and the fallback when everything else is full.
The comparison that actually decides it
- Fastest: direct flight, ~1h10 in the air, 3-4 hours door to door, ฿2,000-6,600.
- Best value for most travellers: budget flight to Surat Thani + through bus-ferry, 4.5-6 hours, ฿1,400-2,500.
- Best experience per baht: overnight sleeper + ferry, ~14 hours door to door but you sleep through 10 of them, ฿1,300-1,800.
- Absolute cheapest: bus + ferry, 10-12 hours, from ~฿900.
Booking-friction notes that matter
- Two airports in Bangkok: the direct Samui flight leaves from Suvarnabhumi (BKK); the budget Surat Thani flights leave from Don Mueang (DMK). Landing internationally at one and departing from the other means an hour of Bangkok traffic - check your terminals before congratulating yourself on a connection.
- Season: December-April is high season; book the direct flight and sleepers well ahead. Monsoon (October-December especially) can choppy the crossing and occasionally cancel ferries - the flight never cancels for waves.
- Ferry head: the crossing is 1.5 hours on Raja/Seatran car ferries or about 45 minutes on Lomprayah's catamaran from a different pier - check which pier your ticket uses; they are 20 minutes apart by road.
