Bangkok is one of the cheapest international trips an Indian couple can take - and one of the easiest to overspend on. The difference comes down to a few decisions: when you fly, where you sleep, and whether you eat like a local or like a tourist. Here is a realistic 2026 budget for two people, in both baht and rupees, built from current cost guides and fare data.
1. The totals first: three honest budgets for 5 days
Current Bangkok cost guides put a five-day trip for a couple, excluding flights, at roughly 10,000-16,000 baht on a tight budget, 32,000-50,000 baht for a comfortable mid-range trip, and 125,000 baht or more for luxury. At the current exchange rate of about 1 THB = Rs 2.87, that is roughly Rs 29,000-46,000 (budget), Rs 92,000-1,43,000 (mid-range), and Rs 3,60,000+ (luxury) for the two of you on the ground. Most Indian couples we plan for land in the mid-range band: clean air-conditioned hotels, three good meals a day, trains and boats, and one or two paid experiences daily.
2. Flights: the single biggest line item
Return fares from India to Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang) typically run Rs 8,000-15,000 per person when booked six to eight weeks ahead on low-cost carriers like IndiGo and Thai AirAsia; route-fare aggregators put the Delhi-Bangkok average return near Rs 20,000, with February the cheapest month and June-July the dearest. For a couple, budget Rs 16,000-40,000 for flights depending on how early you book and which season you pick. This one decision swings the trip total more than any hotel choice.
3. Hotels: what each zone costs per night
Bangkok's budget zones map neatly to couple-friendly price bands. A private hostel room in Silom runs about Rs 900-1,500 a night; a budget guesthouse in the Ari neighbourhood about Rs 1,200-2,000; a boutique hotel in Sukhumvit about Rs 2,500-4,000; and riverside boutique hotels start around 3,500 baht (about Rs 10,000) a night. For a first Bangkok trip as a couple, Silom or the Riverside area balances price, quiet and access to the temples and boats. Five nights mid-range: plan roughly Rs 10,000-20,000.
4. Food and drink: cheap if you eat local
Street food plates run about 40-80 baht (Rs 115-230) per dish - pad thai, boat noodles, mango sticky rice. Sit-down restaurant meals run about 100-250 baht (Rs 287-718) per person, and mall food courts land in between at roughly 50-100 baht a plate in air conditioning. A local beer costs about 70-120 baht. A couple eating street-food lunches and casual dinners spends about Rs 1,500-2,500 a day on food; add rooftop bars or hotel restaurants and that doubles quickly.
5. Transport, SIM and the small stuff
Local transport is minor: BTS/MRT rides cost 17-62 baht, river boats 15-30 baht, and a taxi from either airport about Rs 400-700 on the meter. The Airport Rail Link from Suvarnabhumi to Phaya Thai is 45 baht; the A1/A2 bus from Don Mueang to the BTS is 15 baht. A 15-day tourist SIM with 15 GB data costs about 399 baht (Rs 1,146) - noticeably pricier than Indian data, so buy one SIM and hotspot. Attractions are modest too: the Grand Palace is 500 baht, Wat Pho 300 baht, Wat Arun 100 baht per person.
6. Good news on the visa line: zero
Indian passport holders currently enter Thailand visa-free for stays up to 60 days, so the visa line of the budget is genuinely Rs 0. That removes a cost couples often mentally add. Do carry onward tickets, hotel bookings and proof of funds - visa-free does not mean document-free at immigration.
7. Where couples actually overspend
The budget-breakers are predictable: last-minute flights in peak season (the June-July and Christmas windows run 50%+ above cheap-month fares), rooftop-bar evenings at 300-500 baht a cocktail, hotel breakfasts you could replace with a 50-baht market plate, and taxis in gridlock when the BTS or boat would do. Thailand overall runs about 1.5-2x Indian prices on day-to-day items, so the "expensive" feeling is usually about choices, not the destination. A mid-range couple that books flights early, sleeps in Silom, and eats local lands near Rs 1,20,000-1,60,000 all-in for five days - flights included.
Before you book
Check five things: flight prices for your exact dates against the cheap-month pattern; which airport your fare lands at (BKK vs DMK); your hotel zone against the temple-and-boat plan; the current THB-INR rate before converting budgets; and one SIM-plus-hotspot instead of two.
