AI illustration: fictional travellers plan before a journey. The generic phone and sketch are not IRCTC, a ticket or confirmation of a boarding-point change.
Changing the boarding station means changing where you join the train, not which gate or platform entrance you use at the same station. Make the request through the booking’s supported facility and check that it succeeded before relying on the new station. Simply deciding to join later is not the same as an accepted change.
Use the newer second-chart announcement, not an old countdown
Southern Railway’s 2 April 2026 release says the change facility through PRS counters and IRCTC was extended, effective 1 April 2026, up to preparation of the second/final reservation chart. Its explanation also says up to 30 minutes before departure. Treat the chart-preparation boundary as something to confirm for your actual train, not a promise that every ticket’s button remains available until a universal clock time.
A 14 July 2026 Ministry report via PIB lists digital change of boarding point among reforms already implemented. The current IRCTC terms describe the online facility subject to the extant limit set by Indian Railways.
There is conflicting older official content: IRCTC’s page stating an effective date of 28 January 2016 still says 24 hours. We have not silently combined that cutoff with the newer 2026 announcement. If your actual booking does not offer the expected change, contact IRCTC or the reservation office promptly. Do not wait for an assumed deadline or travel on an unconfirmed interpretation.
Check the ticket’s eligibility and the change history
The 1 April 2026 Indian Express explanation says the updated facility is for confirmed and RAC tickets, not waitlisted tickets, and the request must precede second-chart preparation. Use the ticket’s actual status and current conditions rather than assuming every PNR qualifies.
IRCTC’s currently hosted boarding-station guidelines, carrying a 2019 copyright, list exclusions: a seized ticket, a PNR with VIKALP, current-booking tickets and online changes for i-tickets. They also say that when the boarding station was changed at the initial booking, one further change may be made from Booked Ticket History. That is a specific distinction, not permission for repeated changes. Check any earlier modification before proceeding.
Open the correct journey, then the change option
On the website, the published 2026 walkthrough uses My Account → My Transactions → Booked Ticket History, then selects the ticket and Change Boarding Point. Compare train number, journey date and the existing boarding station first. Choose only from the station options presented for that train and review the confirmation carefully.
In the official IRCTC Rail Connect Android guide, page 34, the Ticket Details three-dot menu includes Change Boarding Point, marked “T&C Applicable”. The guide’s illustrations are examples, not proof of eligibility or of a change to your own ticket.
Our final check is to reopen the booking, read the stored boarding station and retain the acknowledgement. The 2026 walkthrough describes a success alert and a corresponding message to the mobile number provided during booking. A click without a successful result is not enough. If the option is missing or an error appears, ask IRCTC before making your onward travel plan.
Changing the station changes your original boarding rights
The IRCTC guidelines say that after changing the boarding station, the passenger loses the right to board from the original station. Travelling between the original and changed boarding points without proper authority can attract fare with penalty. Do not change it as an experiment and then assume the original station is still usable.
The same guidelines say that a change within 24 hours of departure has no refund in normal circumstances; specified exceptional events, including train cancellation, non-attachment of coach and more-than-three-hour late running, remain subject to normal refund rules. This is a caution about consequences, not a refund promise. Confirm your exact ticket’s conditions before changing.
If the system and your plan do not match
Ask railway support or the reservation office about the actual PNR, intended station and time remaining. The Southern Railway release includes PRS-counter access as well as IRCTC. Do not mistake this for permission to skip the booked station without changing the booking. Unplanned late boarding and an accepted boarding-point change are different situations.
Sources checked 27 October 2026. The 2026 implemented announcement grounds the newer deadline; older official 24-hour text is disclosed as conflicting. The 2019 guidelines supply their stated conditions, not a claim that those conditions were freshly announced in 2026. No ticket was changed to prepare this article.
