Colombo from December to March: lower-rainfall months still need a weather plan

January and February are historically drier in the named Colombo dataset, not guaranteed clear. Separate monthly normals from your forecast, crowds and ticket decisions.

December to March is a reasonable Colombo planning window, but it is not four months of identical weather. In the WMO 1991-2020 Colombo station sheet used here, January and February have lower average rainfall than December, while March is warmer and rain rises again. Choose around that trade-off, then check a current forecast for the actual outing. “Dry season” is not an umbrella refund policy.

Checked on 30 October 2026. The figures below are historical climate normals, not a December 2026-March 2027 forecast. They do not establish travel-day rain, crowd levels, hotel prices, marine safety or attraction opening.

One station, one clearly named dataset

We use the Sri Lanka Colombo station 43466 sheet in NOAA's archive of WMO 1991-2020 normals. The rows used report 30 contributing years. NOAA explains that normals give monthly and annual values for climate elements. These are averages across the reference period, not a schedule for the next season.

  • December: rainfall 170.7 mm; 9.0 days with at least 1 mm of rain; average daily maximum/minimum 30.9°C/23.5°C.
  • January: rainfall 79.6 mm; 4.9 days with at least 1 mm; average daily maximum/minimum 31.4°C/23.1°C.
  • February: rainfall 77.4 mm; 5.1 days with at least 1 mm; average daily maximum/minimum 31.6°C/23.6°C.
  • March: rainfall 102.7 mm; 7.7 days with at least 1 mm; average daily maximum/minimum 32.0°C/24.8°C.

A fractional rain-day count is a long-term average. It does not mean rain will last that many complete days or let you identify which dates will be dry. An average daily maximum is not the hottest possible temperature, and a minimum is not an evening comfort guarantee.

Japan Meteorological Agency's Colombo normals display different rainfall figures. We have not combined those series or presented one as a correction of the other. Keep the named source and reference period attached to any number you use.

How to choose within the window

December: allow more flexibility for rain than in the January-February historical pattern. Do not promise an uninterrupted seafront afternoon simply because your trip falls in the usual tourist season.

January or February: these are the lower-rainfall choices within this four-month dataset. That is a useful planning preference if dates are flexible, not proof of a clear week. The temperature rows still describe warm days, so plan shade, water and breaks.

March: the average maximum and minimum are higher than in December, and rainfall is above January-February. Keep long outdoor walks optional and choose a room and transport plan that allow a proper break. “Less rain than the wettest months” does not mean cool sightseeing weather.

Plan the day so weather can change it

Use short outdoor blocks rather than making a full waterfront walk compulsory. Keep a return pickup and an indoor alternative, subject to that venue's opening and access. An average monthly total cannot tell you whether a specific storm will disrupt the afternoon.

For a family trip, our Colombo parents plan leaves the final day optional. Gangaramaya's contact page publishes broad daily hours, but those do not guarantee every room or ticket counter is open throughout them. The Lotus Tower portal uses selected date/time tickets and says they are non-refundable. Do not buy a rigid slot purely because a climate chart looks reassuring.

Before an outdoor visit, consult the Sri Lanka Department of Meteorology's current forecast and warnings. Check the issue time, relevant area and valid period. A live warning takes priority over this historical guide. Sea conditions need their own current guidance; city rainfall averages do not certify boat trips or swimming.

What to book first, and what this data cannot decide

First secure the parts that determine the whole trip: suitable flights, a room with the access and cancellation terms you need, and the airport transfer. That is an editorial order of operations, not a claim that those options are selling out. Keep optional admissions flexible until the actual day plan works.

No matched December-March hotel-rate or flight-inventory comparison was established for this article. We cannot name the cheapest month, forecast crowds or declare one week fully booked. An event needs its own confirmed dates and ticket terms. Do not turn the broad seasonal window into a festival calendar.

Pack for warm weather and possible rain: a light rain layer or umbrella, footwear that suits your outings, and a way to keep essential documents dry. For temples, confirm the current dress and footwear rules separately. Better weather planning does not cancel the rules at the gate.

The short answer

If your only decision is which of these months has the lower historical rainfall in this dataset, start with January or February. If your dates are fixed in December or March, build a flexible Colombo stay rather than dismissing the trip. In every case, use current weather and venue confirmation before the actual outing.

Questions on this article

asked by readers, answered by us

Are these forecasts for December 2026 to March 2027?

No. They are historical WMO1991-2020 normals for Colombo station43466. Use the current forecast and warnings for your actual dates.

Which of these four months has lower average rainfall?

In the named dataset, January and February have lower monthly rainfall totals than December and March. This does not guarantee a clear week or no rain.

Do the normals identify the cheapest or least crowded month?

No. A matched dated-rate and inventory comparison was not established. Climate figures do not confirm prices, crowds, event dates or venue opening.
