Choose Colombo if your family wants a city stay with Gangaramaya, a possible waterfront pause and fewer changes of base. Choose Kandy if the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a main reason for the trip and you can protect time for the inland transfer. Neither city wins because somebody called it “senior-friendly”.
For a short visit with tired parents, our default is not to split every night between the two. Pick the main experience, confirm the actual access, then price the whole journey. A cheap room is less impressive after you add a transfer nobody included.
Compare the family job, not the postcard
- Main visit: Colombo offers a city plan around Gangaramaya, with Galle Face optional. Kandy centres this comparison on the Temple of the Tooth, with Peradeniya's gardens a separate optional outing.
- Arrival: Bandaranaike International Airport is not Colombo Fort railway station or central Kandy. Compare a direct road quote to your chosen hotel with the complete hotel/station/rail/local-transfer chain, not just one leg.
- Mobility: Kandy's temple publishes a named assistance route to ask about. Colombo's attraction listings do not certify a complete step-free circuit. Neither is a substitute for confirming your family's needs.
- Budget: compare the same dates, room occupancy, meals and cancellation terms. No matched hotel basket was established, so this article does not label one city universally cheaper.
- Length of stay: with only a few nights, choose one base unless the second city's main visit matters enough to justify packing and moving again. This is planning advice, not a minimum-stay rule.
Kandy: the temple is the reason, not a free add-on
The Temple of the Tooth's own FAQ lists LKR 2,500 for SAARC visitors, the relevant published category for Indian visitors, compared with LKR 3,000 for other countries outside its separately named categories. Check the current counter requirements and carry identification; do not pay an unofficial person outside.
The FAQ requires entrance screening and respectful clothing, and says to hand over footwear, bulky luggage and non-essential items at the booths. These steps take effort even when the main visit is short. Protect a seated break rather than filling the gap with another attraction.
For special assistance, the temple tells visitors to call the administration office on 0812234226 about transport from the main entrance and use of the lift. That is a useful concrete enquiry, not confirmation the lift is operating at your chosen time or that every museum room, toilet and approach is accessible. Ask about your mobility aid and exact route.
The botanic gardens department places Royal Botanic Gardens Peradeniya about 5.5 km west of Kandy. Treat it as another transfer and a selected garden visit, not “a quick walk after the temple”. A current buggy allocation, accessible route and live ticket quote were not verified here.
Colombo: keep the city day small
Gangaramaya's own contact page gives 61 Sri Jinarathana Road, Colombo 2 and published daily hours of 06:00-22:00. Those broad hours do not promise that every room or ticket counter operates throughout. Ask about admission, dress, footwear, seating and the actual step-free route you need.
Galle Face can remain optional rather than an obligation after the temple. No complete approach, suitable toilet or close vehicle drop-off was verified in this comparison. Agree a short visit and an easy return, or skip it when weather and energy do not cooperate.
If you add Lotus Tower, use its foreign-visitor ticket page, not the Sri Lankan local price. It lists dated slots and non-refundable, non-transferable tickets. Do not buy it merely to fill a spare hour before you know the family's timing and access needs.
Do not build the Kandy choice around an unchecked train
Newswire and Daily Mirror reported on 25 October 2026, attributing the announcement to the Railway Department, that services between Rambukkana and Peradeniya/Gampola were suspended until further notice after a landslide near Kadigamuwa. During this check we did not establish a later reopening or recover the current primary operational notice.
That is a dated, attributed warning, not a claim to know every train's live status on your future date. Ask Sri Lanka Railways about the exact service, operating endpoint and any onward road connection before booking around it. An old timetable, an earlier restart story or a rail-booking screen alone does not confirm the whole transfer is running.
For a road alternative, get a current quote for the actual hotel and ask about conditions, comfort stops, bags, tolls and waiting. No road journey time or vehicle fare is promised here.
What would change our pick?
Choose Kandy when the temple is the family's priority and the hotel/transfer/assistance plan is workable. Choose Colombo when the family wants the city visit and avoiding another base change is worth more than adding the temple. Choose both only when you have enough uncommitted time to absorb the transfer without stealing rest or the flight buffer.
Before paying, total the same items for each choice: all-in room rate, both main transfers, local journeys, attraction tickets, meals and the cost of cancelling. Compare the plan your family can actually do, not the cheapest line in two unrelated search results.
