For Colombo–Chennai–Hyderabad, treat Chennai as the transfer job to resolve, not simply the middle city printed on the ticket. Confirm the actual operating airlines, issued ticket arrangement and onward domestic terminal. This walkthrough covers an ordinary international arrival at Chennai followed by a domestic departure; obtain separate instructions if your carrier confirms a different clearance programme. No dated flight, gate or exact bag-drop counter is assumed.
1. Before leaving Colombo: confirm the Chennai handoff
Our suggested record: Colombo–Chennai flight and date, Chennai–Hyderabad flight and date, operating airlines, ticket references, current onward terminal, issued boarding passes and bag-tag receipts. Ask the origin airline whether it will issue the Hyderabad pass and where you must collect and hand back the suitcase. A HYD tag or two boarding passes is not permission to skip the Indian arrival process.
2. If using IndiGo’s sold connection, keep its limits attached
IndiGo says its international-to-domestic connections require bag collection at the first Indian port of entry, Customs clearance and domestic bag drop. It issues passes at origin for the final destination. The facility is for a valid connection sold by IndiGo in one PNR, not a self-created or multi-city itinerary even under one reference. If that describes your Colombo–Chennai–Hyderabad booking, Chennai is the first Indian port in this route. Do not apply the promise of origin-issued passes or connection bag drop to a different booking type. Official source.
3. On arrival: complete the confirmed entry and baggage route
CBIC’s February 2026 traveller guide describes the ordinary arrival sequence as immigration, baggage collection if any, then Customs. It is a convenient reference with no legal force, not the Gazette-published law. Follow the actual entry and Customs instructions for your traveller category and goods. With no checked bag, omit the collection task, not the required border process. With a suitcase, keep it with you until the onward airline accepts it. No allowance amount or duty calculation is provided here. Official source.
4. Before moving terminals: is Hyderabad departing from T1 or T4?
AAI’s Chennai connection-time sheet separately lists T2 international-to-T1 domestic and T2 international-to-T4 domestic. Therefore “domestic” is not enough to select one terminal. Air India’s own Chennai page places its counters at T2 and T4 and describes T4 domestic operations; use that as Air India information, not a terminal assignment for every airline. Our suggestion: show the current Hyderabad flight to airline or airport staff and confirm the terminal, counter or bag-drop service that accepts the booking before moving. Official source. Air India: Chennai.
5. Carry the bag under the airline’s confirmed transfer instructions
For its qualifying international-to-domestic connection, IndiGo says a passenger changing terminals carries the bag and drops it at the departure terminal’s baggage counter. It does not provide inter-terminal transport. AAI’s Chennai facilities page lists free battery-operated vehicles and courtesy coaches between international and domestic terminals. That AAI page does not specify a pickup point, departure interval, accessibility guarantee or ride duration. This limitation refers to the AAI listing, not every source or airport service. Ask airport staff for the current service to your confirmed terminal; do not confuse an airport vehicle with an airline baggage transfer. Official source. AAI: Chennai facilities.
6. At the onward terminal: complete the remaining departure work
Our practical suggestion: follow the airline’s actual check-in or bag-drop instructions, obtain or validate the Hyderabad boarding pass if needed, complete domestic security and check the current gate. A separate ticket may need the ordinary departure counter rather than a connection desk. Confirm acceptance and current deadlines with the onward carrier. An origin-issued pass does not by itself mean the suitcase has been accepted or security is complete.
7. Do not turn a generic “one hour” into a safe connection
AAI’s sheet lists 120 minutes for both T2 international-to-T1 domestic and T2 international-to-T4 domestic, while its same-terminal domestic rows list 60 minutes. Air India’s generic Chennai page says “minimum layover time: one hour” without distinguishing those routes. For this international-to-domestic transfer, do not substitute that generic hour for AAI’s applicable terminal-pair row. The sheet has no visible issue date and does not establish a safe separate-ticket buffer or guarantee boarding. Ask your carrier to validate the actual connection and count immigration, baggage, Customs, walking or vehicle wait, the next counter, security and gate deadlines. Official source. Air India: Chennai.
Before continuing to Hyderabad
Our checklist: required Chennai arrival process completed; bag collected if required; onward operating airline and T1/T4 terminal confirmed; actual bag handoff accepted; valid Hyderabad pass available; remaining security and gate route clear. If delayed, tell the onward airline promptly. This guide promises no automatic rebooking, priority clearance, fixed shuttle wait or safe minimum for independently booked tickets.
