For seventeen years, if you wanted to fly from India to Scandinavia, you were changing planes somewhere. As of this month, that era is over: SAS is flying nonstop between Copenhagen and Mumbai, five times a week.
The route launched on 1 October 2026, on an Airbus A330, and tickets are already on sale. It's SAS's first India service in 17 years, and it quietly changes the math for anyone planning a Europe trip from India's west coast.
What actually launched
The specifics, since "new route" announcements often turn out to be three flights a week in a codeshare nobody can book: this is a real, year-round, nonstop service. Copenhagen (CPH) to Mumbai (BOM), flight numbers SK969 and SK970, five times weekly, flown by SAS itself.
Copenhagen is the point, not just the destination. It's SAS's home hub, which means smooth onward connections across Scandinavia and Northern Europe, plus long-haul links to New York, Boston and Toronto. One stop in Mumbai, and most of Northern Europe is suddenly close.

Why this matters more than a typical route launch
Indian travellers to Europe have been shrinking their options for years without realising it. Most Europe itineraries from India default to the same entry points: Paris, Amsterdam, Zurich, Rome. Not because those are the best fits, but because that's where the direct flights go.
Copenhagen opens a different Europe. Denmark, Sweden and Norway become first stops instead of complicated add-ons. And for anyone who's done the classic Paris-Switzerland circuit already, the Nordics are the obvious next chapter: cleaner air, fewer crowds, design, food, and summers that actually feel like a break from India.

The honest caveat
Nonstop doesn't automatically mean cheapest. New routes often launch with promotional fares, then settle. If you're flying from Delhi, Bengaluru or elsewhere, compare the Mumbai positioning flight plus the nonstop against one-stop options from your own city. Sometimes the direct flight wins on total journey time even when it loses on price, and on a once-a-year Europe trip, the hours you save each way are worth something too.
Quick questions, answered
When did the Copenhagen-Mumbai nonstop start? 1 October 2026, five times a week, year-round, on an Airbus A330.
Is it only useful for Denmark? No. Copenhagen is SAS's hub, so the route works as a gateway to Sweden, Norway, Finland and beyond, plus onward flights to North America.
Do Indians need a visa for Denmark? Yes, a Schengen visa. Denmark is part of Schengen, so the same visa covers most of Europe. Apply with buffer time; appointment slots are the real bottleneck.
