A damaged passport is not a problem to settle by guessing at the airport. Passport Seva separates damage where the passport number and name remain legible and the photograph is intact from damage beyond recognition. That distinction affects the re-issue route; it is not an airline’s approval to travel with the booklet.
What Passport Seva says
Its Lost/Damaged Passports FAQ says duplicate passports are not issued. Apply under the re-issue category with the reason Lost/Damaged Passport. A new passport with a different number may be issued with fresh validity.
For urgent travel, the FAQ says a passport not damaged beyond recognition can be considered for re-issue under Tatkaal. The passport number and name must be legible and the photo intact. Final authority for Tatkaal issuance rests with the Passport Office. Damage beyond recognition is not eligible for Tatkaal under this answer.
Before changing the trip
Ask the Passport Office about your case and use the current document requirements for the application you are making. The FAQ’s separate document list for someone returning on an Emergency Certificate is not a universal checklist for every damaged-passport application.
Check the airline and destination requirements before treating the existing booklet as usable. This article does not set a universal threshold for a torn page, water mark or damaged chip, and does not promise that a readable passport will be accepted at check-in or the border.
After a replacement
A new passport number can mean checking the details attached to your ticket, visa or other travel permission. Ask the relevant airline or issuing authority what must be updated; do not assume one rule covers every visa.
We quote no fee or guaranteed delivery time. Check the current fee and appointment process directly with Passport Seva before paying. Tatkaal is a route to request consideration, not a promise to rescue a fixed departure date.
