DigiYatra without Aadhaar? A Driving Licence option is not an Aadhaar-free setup promise

DigiYatra lists Driving Licence enrolment through DigiLocker. But DigiLocker’s licence-retrieval FAQ still asks for Aadhaar linking. Know the difference.

A Driving Licence can be a DigiYatra enrolment credential, but that does not prove you can complete setup with no Aadhaar involvement. Separate the document you choose inside DigiYatra from the requirements for getting that document through DigiLocker. If “without Aadhaar” means you have no Aadhaar at all, do not rely on the Driving Licence option as a guaranteed workaround. What is now documented for DigiYatra

The Ministry of Civil Aviation's parliamentary answer of 6 August 2026 lists Driving Licence-based enrolment through DigiLocker among DigiYatra's available features. Our reading: an old statement that the app accepts only Aadhaar is not a safe current answer. This source supports that named alternative, not a rule that any government photo ID or a photograph of a card can create a DigiYatra credential. Lok Sabha answer (6 August 2026).

The DigiLocker requirement is a different question

DigiLocker's current public FAQ describes how to obtain a digital Driving Licence from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways database. It says users should ensure their Aadhaar number is linked with their DigiLocker account. It also says the Aadhaar name should match the name in the Driving Licence database. Those are the issuer-platform's published retrieval conditions, even when the credential later chosen for DigiYatra is the licence. DigiLocker FAQ: licence retrieval and documents.

An account is not the same as an issued licence

The same FAQ allows DigiLocker signup using a mobile or Aadhaar number, but that does not remove the separate licence-retrieval instructions. Its document section distinguishes issued documents obtained from the original source from files a user uploads. Our practical advice: do not assume opening an account, uploading a card photo or carrying a physical licence has completed DigiYatra enrolment. Our practical advice: check that the supported credential can actually be obtained and used in the current flow before departure day. DigiLocker FAQ: licence retrieval and documents.

If the setup cannot be completed

Use DigiYatra Foundation's official support route for the app problem. Its contact page expressly says not to share Aadhaar numbers or Aadhaar copies for troubleshooting. Our practical advice: do not send identity documents or an OTP to a stranger promising to enable the alternative route. No personal enrolment was submitted or tested for this guide, so it cannot confirm that your device, record or account will pass validation. DigiYatra Foundation: support and Aadhaar warning.

Keep flight identification separate from app eligibility

An airline's accepted-ID list and DigiYatra enrolment are different checks. A document accepted for ordinary travel does not automatically become an app credential. Delhi Airport describes ordinary terminal entry using a valid government photo ID and a print or digital boarding pass or air ticket. Our practical advice: keep the accepted documents for your actual airline and journey ready. For the first-use sequence after choosing a supported credential, follow the airport's current DigiYatra instructions rather than treating this eligibility answer as a complete app tutorial. Does DigiYatra still accept only Aadhaar as the enrolment credential?

The Ministry's 6 August 2026 answer lists Driving Licence-based enrolment through DigiLocker as an available feature.

Does that prove setup needs no Aadhaar at all?

No. DigiLocker's current licence-retrieval FAQ asks users to link Aadhaar with their account.

Does a self-uploaded licence photo complete the process?

DigiLocker distinguishes issued documents from user uploads. Our practical advice: do not assume a self-uploaded photo completes enrolment; follow the supported current credential process.
