Domestic boarding pass at an international terminal: check the flight and the zone

A domestic flight can use a shared international terminal. Check the assigned flight, entry documents and domestic route without assuming international access.

Sometimes a domestic flight uses a building that also handles international flights. Delhi's Terminal 3 is one example. A domestic boarding pass can fit that terminal when your flight actually departs there, but it is not permission to enter any international departure area. Separate the building, your flight's assigned route and border clearance.

Before leaving home: identify the flight, not the terminal's nickname

Read the departure airport, flight number, date and current terminal on the airline's booking or boarding pass. Check the operating airline, not only the ticket seller. A building described as an international terminal may also handle domestic departures. Delhi Airport's T3 page explicitly says it operates both. That does not mean every Delhi domestic flight leaves from T3.

If your booking, a message and an old search result disagree, ask the airline to settle the actual terminal before sending your driver there. Use the separate terminal-finding guide below for that check. This article answers what the domestic document means at the assigned terminal; it is not a live terminal lookup or an airline-to-terminal list.

At the entrance: show the documents for your actual journey

Delhi Airport's departure guide says terminal entry is for ticketed passengers. It lists valid domestic identification, an air ticket in the format required by the airline and boarding-pass arrangements. Keep the accepted original ID and the current ticket or issued boarding pass accessible. Do not assume a booking reference, an old pass or another person's document proves your entry eligibility.

Our practical suggestion at a shared terminal: show staff the flight and ask, “My flight is domestic and assigned to this terminal. Which entry and airline counter should I use?” Follow the check made for that flight. This is not a promise that every entrance accepts every document or that a domestic pass allows access to an unrelated flight's terminal.

After check-in: follow the domestic route

Delhi's departure guide separates the next steps: domestic passengers proceed to security after check-in; international passengers complete immigration and security. Being inside T3 does not change a domestic destination into an international journey. Follow your flight's current signs and staff instructions rather than joining an international queue because the building name sounds right.

If a barrier or checkpoint does not accept your document, stop and ask staff to check the assigned route. Do not edit the pass, borrow a different pass, follow someone through a gate or cross a closed barrier. Terminal entry, security screening and immigration clearance are different checks. This guide grants none of them and does not establish lounge eligibility or visitor access.

A specific Air India exception: domestic travel on AI 11xx

Air India's Easy Connect page says some flights under its programme may depart from or arrive at international terminals. For a passenger travelling only to the Indian hub city, its FAQ says the immigration process does not apply. However, on the stated AI 11xx service, web check-in is unavailable and the physical boarding pass must be collected at the origin counter.

For that hub-only domestic traveller, the airline says the physical pass is marked with “D” and must be kept until exit from the hub terminal. This is a carrier-specific instruction, not a universal boarding-pass code. Do not copy a “D” onto your document or conclude that any four-digit flight uses that route. Confirm the actual terminal and process with Air India.

The same programme has a different branch for eligible onward international passengers: AI 11xx, an international sector on the ticket and a connection of four hours or less. It describes origin immigration and special hub-transfer instructions. Those are not the hub-only domestic passenger's route. If you continue abroad, show the whole itinerary and have the airline identify the applicable branch before departure. The existing immigration guide below covers that separate question.

If you went to the wrong terminal or area

Tell the airline or airport information staff your flight number, terminal shown and where you are now. Ask for the permitted route to the correct departures point and whether the remaining check-in or boarding deadline is workable. If already past security, do not independently exit backwards to search for another counter. Ask staff to explain the controlled-area handoff.

A shared terminal does not guarantee an airside shortcut, a free transfer or enough time to make the flight. A pass issued for one sector does not confirm the terminal or access route of the next sector. Recheck after a change and keep the airline-confirmed counter, bag-drop and gate deadlines in view.

Keep this departure checklist together

Current flight and date; departure airport and confirmed terminal; valid ID required for the actual journey; current ticket and issued boarding pass; whether a counter visit is still required; and the airline-confirmed domestic or special-programme route. Keep the physical pass when your airline requires it. If you are travelling internationally later, also carry the passport and required journey documents; a domestic pass does not replace them.

Sources checked 29 October 2026. The airport examples are Delhi and the special programme example is Air India. They do not establish access rules for every Indian airport or grant entry to an international restricted area.

Questions on this article

asked by readers, answered by us

Does a domestic flight always use a domestic-only terminal?

No. Delhi T3 operates both domestic and international flights. Confirm the actual flight’s assigned terminal.

Does my domestic pass let me enter the international departure area?

Do not assume that. Follow the assigned flight route and checkpoint instructions. Shared building entry is different from international-area or immigration permission.

Does a hub-only Air India AI 11xx passenger clear immigration?

Its programme FAQ says immigration does not apply when travelling only to the Indian hub. It requires counter check-in and retention of the physical pass marked D until exit.
