The honest answer for most Indian families is not Hong Kong or Macau - it is Hong Kong and Macau, in that order. Hong Kong is the fuller trip: more sights, more food, more energy, and where your flights land. Macau is the slower, gentler add-on: compact, walkable, cheaper room for room, and an hour away. Here is the comparison that matters, with prices from the official ferry and bridge-bus operators, checked 31 October 2026.
Pace: city buzz versus old-town stroll
Hong Kong runs fast: the MTR, the markets, the Peak queues, dim sum at speed. It rewards 3-4 full days. Macau runs at half that pace - the historic centre around Senado Square and the Ruins of St Paul is a few walkable lanes, the fortress and museums sit close together, and the Cotai casino strip is essentially an evening of free spectacle: fountain shows, indoor canals, themed resorts you can wander without spending anything. With parents or young kids, Macau is the easier day; with teenagers, Hong Kong wins on variety.
Getting between them: ferry versus bridge bus
Two good options. The TurboJET ferry from Sheung Wan (Hong Kong Island) to Macau takes about 60 minutes; economy class is HK$194 on weekday day sailings and HK$212 on weekends and holidays, fares effective 25 April 2026 (turbojet.com.hk). The cheaper, flexible option is the HZMB shuttle bus over the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge: HK$65 daytime, HK$70 at night, running 24 hours every 5-15 minutes (hzmbus.com) - but factor in the bus ride from the city to the bridge port near the airport, which makes total journey time similar to the ferry. Ferries sell out on weekend afternoons; the bridge bus rarely does.
Entry: easier than you think
Indian passports are on Macao's official visa-exemption list (gov.mo), so a side trip needs no extra visa - carry the same passport and your Hong Kong PAR confirmation for the return. Macau uses the pataca (MOP), pegged roughly 1:1 with the Hong Kong dollar, and HK dollars are accepted almost everywhere at par - no forex run needed for a day or two.
Budget: where each city takes your money
Hong Kong's pressure point is hotels - a mid-range Tsim Sha Tsui night averages HK$1,350 (see our Hong Kong budget breakdown) - while food and transport stay modest. Macau flips it: resort hotels are large and frequently cheaper than Hong Kong equivalents outside big weekends, the casino shuttle buses from the ferry terminal and border are free, and the main heritage sights cost nothing. What Macau tempts you to spend on is the evening - shows, buffets, and the tables themselves. Set that line before you go and Macau is the cheaper two days.
The practical split
For a 5-6 day trip: fly into Hong Kong, give it 3-4 days (our relaxed 3-day itinerary works as the core), ferry or bus to Macau for 1-2 nights, and fly home from either airport. Do Macau midweek if you can - weekend ferry fares and hotel rates both jump. If you genuinely must pick one: first-time family, pick Hong Kong; repeat visitors or a parents-focused slow trip, Macau earns its own weekend.
