The short answer
Follow the "Enquiry / पूछताछ" signs at the station - the railways' own signage standards direct passengers to the Enquiry office. Places to check are the main concourse or beside the main booking office; layouts vary from station to station, so treat the signs and staff directions, not memory, as the guide. Don't assume a separate enquiry counter is available at your station - ask uniformed staff where enquiry or help is available. If you cannot find the counter or the queue is long, call or SMS 139 - the railways' single Rail Madad helpline - for PNR, train arrival/departure, seat availability, fare and timetable enquiries, or open the NTES app for live train running status.
What the enquiry counter can tell you
The counter is the station's information desk for your journey: which platform your train is expected on, coach position when announced, current running status, and general fare or availability questions. Keep your PNR number, train number and journey date in hand - with those, staff can identify your train and booking without guesswork.
Skip the queue: 139 and the apps
IRCTC's enquiry page lists what 139 handles by call or SMS: PNR enquiry, train arrival/departure, accommodation availability, fare enquiry and train timetable - with trained agents answering in Hindi, English and regional languages. A March 2021 Railway Ministry announcement had folded the older helplines into this single number for queries, complaints and assistance during travel, and noted it works from any phone, not just smartphones. RailMadad's portal currently presents 139 as the number for security and medical assistance too. For live running status, the NTES app (from CRIS, the railways' IT arm) or enquiry.indianrail.gov.in shows where your train is right now, and station display boards and announcements carry platform details as they are finalized.
If you are stuck at the station
Ask any uniformed railway staff member or RPF personnel: "Enquiry kahan hai?" If the station has a help desk, the area near the main entrance is a sensible place to check - not a guaranteed spot. One caution: ignore touts who offer paid "information" or ticket help - the counter, 139 and official apps are the reliable channels, and none of them needs a middleman.
Common questions
Is 139 only for complaints?
No. IRCTC's enquiry page lists PNR, arrival/departure, availability, fare and timetable enquiries among its services, alongside RailMadad's assistance role.
Will they answer in my language?
IRCTC's page says agents handle Hindi, English and regional languages. The 2021 announcement described twelve languages.
Does every station have an enquiry counter?
Don't assume a separate enquiry counter is available at your station; ask uniformed staff where enquiry or help is available. From anywhere, 139 by call or SMS is the fallback that does not depend on the building.
What should I keep ready before asking?
Your PNR number, train number and journey date. With those three, the staff at the counter or on 139 can identify your train and booking without guesswork.
