The short answer
You do not need to make a special request. When you book with the traveller's correct date of birth, Indian Railways says it allots lower berths to senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and women aged 45 and above automatically - even if no choice is given - subject to availability. On top of that, a combined quota of lower berths is earmarked in every coach for senior citizens, women aged 45 and above, and pregnant women: six to seven in Sleeper, four to five in 3AC, and three to four in 2AC, depending on how many coaches of that class the train has.
How to book it right the first time
Book under the elderly traveller's own name with the date of birth exactly as on their ID - the automatic allotment works off that age. After payment, open the ticket and check the coach and berth that came out. If a lower berth came through, you are done; this applies to confirmed tickets with an allocated berth. If your ticket is RAC or waitlisted, berth allocation works differently - our PNR status guide explains what your status actually means.
If an upper or middle berth was allotted
Availability decides the automatic allotment, so a full train can still hand a senior citizen an upper berth. In that case, board and speak to the TTE early: the Railway Ministry says lower berths that fall vacant in the train are allotted on priority to senior citizens, persons with disabilities and pregnant women who were given a middle or upper berth. Vacancies depend on the actual train, so treat this as a genuine possibility, not a promise.
Persons with disabilities: a separate quota
If the traveller is a person with a disability, there is a dedicated reservation quota in mail/express trains, including Rajdhani/Shatabdi-type trains: four berths in Sleeper (two lower, two middle), four berths in 3AC/3E (two lower, two middle), and four seats in reserved second sitting (2S) or air-conditioned Chair Car (CC). The quota covers the person with a disability and their attendant.
Common questions
Do I need to tick anything or file a request to get a lower berth?
No separate request is needed. The Railway Ministry states the allotment is automatic for senior citizens, persons with disabilities and women aged 45 and above, even if no choice is given - subject to availability, with a per-coach quota behind it.
Which travellers does the automatic allotment cover?
The Railway Ministry's March 2026 statement names senior citizens, persons with disabilities and women aged 45 and above. The shared per-coach lower-berth quota additionally covers pregnant women. All of this is subject to availability.
We booked and got an upper berth. What now?
Onboard, vacant lower berths are allotted on priority to senior citizens, persons with disabilities and pregnant women holding middle or upper berths. Ask the TTE as soon as you board; whether a berth frees up depends on that specific train.
Does this apply to RAC or waitlisted tickets?
These rules describe berth allotment for confirmed tickets with an allocated berth. RAC and waitlisted tickets follow a different chain - see our PNR status guide.
