A six-hour gap between trains at an unfamiliar station is exactly what retiring rooms exist for. They are proper rooms and dormitory beds inside or beside the station building - bookable in advance, and you stay close enough to hear the announcements. Here is how the system actually works, based on IRCTC's retiring room FAQ.
What a retiring room is
Retiring rooms are accommodation facilities at selected railway stations across India, in single-bed, double-bed and dormitory categories, with AC and non-AC options subject to availability. Not every station has them, so the first step is checking the station list on IRCTC's retiring room portal for the station where your connection happens.
The one requirement: a valid PNR
A valid PNR is mandatory for booking. A retiring room can be booked against a confirmed ticket or an RAC ticket, but not against a waitlisted ticket. Against one PNR you can make at most one booking at the source station and one at the destination station. During booking, check whether the portal offers your connection station against either of your tickets' PNRs - keep in mind the train's source station and your own boarding station can be different. If the portal does not offer your connection station against either eligible PNR, confirm eligibility with IRCTC or the station before paying or relying on a room. And if the ticket you plan to use is still waitlisted at booking time, you cannot book the room unless it has moved to RAC or confirmed.
Booking it online
Rooms are booked on IRCTC's retiring room portal, and online booking runs from 12:30 AM to 11:30 PM, subject to system availability. Two things catch people out. First, paying does not confirm the booking - it is confirmed only when a Retiring Room Reference Number is generated; if money is debited without a confirmation, IRCTC says it is refunded to the same account. Second, the details you enter are final: name changes and journey alterations are not permitted, and IRCTC explicitly says it is not responsible for a wrong date or time you selected, so double-check the check-in and check-out date and time before paying. At check-in you must show the printed booking voucher and the original identity proof whose details you entered while booking, and the passenger must be at least 12 years old.
How long you can stay
A retiring room or dormitory bed can generally be booked for 12 to 48 hours. Hourly booking exists at selected stations with a three-hour minimum, but it follows the day's two blocks: the non-principal block (9 AM to 9 PM) can be booked by the hour, while the principal block (9 PM to 9 AM) generally cannot be booked partially - an overnight stay means taking the full night block. Hourly charges are set as a percentage of the 24-hour tariff, from 25% for up to three hours up to 100% for 22-24 hours. If you book beyond 24 hours in one transaction, the second slot counts as an extension and costs an extra 25% of its tariff. On top of the tariff, IRCTC charges a non-refundable service charge plus GST - Rs 20 per room (Rs 40 for 24-48 hours) and Rs 10 per dormitory bed (Rs 20 for 24-48 hours). Tariffs themselves vary by station and room category and show during booking. Rooms are allotted by headcount: one person can take a single room, double room or one dormitory bed; two people get a double room or two dormitory beds, and so on.
If plans change
Cancellation refunds follow a slab counted in calendar dates, and the check-in date itself is not counted: cancel three or more calendar dates before the check-in date and 20% is deducted - 80% is refunded; cancel one or two dates before and 50% is deducted - 50% is refunded; cancel on the check-in date and there is no refund. IRCTC's own example: for a 20 August check-in, cancelling on 17 August or earlier gets 80% back, cancelling on 18 or 19 August gets 50% back, and cancelling on 20 August gets nothing. Cancellation is room-wise or bed-wise, not passenger-wise, and not possible after check-in. An online booking can only be cancelled online, never at the counter. And if the train ticket or PNR behind the booking is completely cancelled, the retiring room booking is cancelled within 96 hours of the check-in time under the applicable rules. No senior citizen concession applies to retiring rooms, and meals are not included.
Quick questions
Can I book a retiring room without a train ticket? No. A valid PNR is mandatory, and it must be confirmed or RAC - a waitlisted ticket cannot be used. During booking, check whether the portal offers your station against your PNR; if it does not, confirm eligibility with IRCTC or the station before paying.
How far in advance can I book? IRCTC's FAQ says booking is permitted up to the applicable check-in time, subject to availability and system rules. Availability is limited to what the system shows, so once your ticket is confirmed or RAC, booking earlier gives you a better chance.
Can I book just a few hours in the afternoon? At stations with hourly booking, yes - between 9 AM and 9 PM you can book in hourly slots with a three-hour minimum, charged as a percentage of the 24-hour tariff. Overnight (9 PM to 9 AM) is generally sold as one block.
What if I book online but need to cancel at the station? You cannot - an online booking can only be cancelled online, and a counter booking only at the counter. Cancel before check-in: 80% back if you cancel at least three calendar dates before the check-in date, 50% if one or two dates before, nothing on the check-in date.
Is there a senior citizen concession or meals with the room? Neither. IRCTC's FAQ states no senior citizen concession is available on retiring room bookings, and lunch or dinner is not included.
