Short answer: for an elderly passenger flying internationally out of Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport, plan to be at the terminal four hours before departure. The arithmetic: KIA has publicly advised passengers to arrive at least three hours ahead, IndiGo recommends international passengers report at least four hours before the flight, and international check-in counters close 60 to 75 minutes before departure depending on the airline. For a senior who walks slower, may need wheelchair assistance and should never have to hurry, four hours converts official minimums into a calm morning.
The hard deadlines behind the advice. Check-in counters are the unforgiving part: Air India closes international counters 60 minutes before departure, IndiGo 75 minutes, and boarding gates shut 20-25 minutes before the flight. Miss the counter cutoff and the conversation is rebooking, not pleading. On top of that, international processing at Bengaluru stacks document checks, security and immigration in series - each one a queue, and none of them skippable.
Why seniors need more than the official minimum. Three reasons. First, pace: a senior who needs a rest between the drop-off and the counter, between security and immigration, burns time the official advice does not budget. Second, assistance: a pre-booked wheelchair meets you at the kerb, but at peak hours there can be a short wait for the escort. Third, Bengaluru itself: the airport sits well outside the city, and a Hebbal or Silk Board traffic jam can eat half an hour without warning - so the 'leave home' time matters as much as the 'reach airport' time.
What the four-hour morning looks like. Wheels down at the T2 kerb four hours out; the pre-booked wheelchair escort takes over; check-in and bag drop done while counters are queue-free; security and immigration at a walking pace with rest stops; gate reached 45-60 minutes before boarding - in time for a chai, not a sprint. Airlines open their counters early to make exactly this possible: Cathay Pacific opens check-in at Bengaluru four hours before departure, Virgin Atlantic three and a half.
Three things that shrink the buffer (do them anyway). Web check-in the day before - Air India and IndiGo both open it 48 hours out - so the counter is a bag-drop, not a process. Keep documents in one folder in the cabin bag: passport, visa, the booking printout seniors are used to. And check the flight status before leaving home; a delayed flight does not delay the counter-closing time by as much as people assume.
How TripKeeper times a senior's airport morning. For parents flying out of Bengaluru, we fix the pickup time backwards from the counter-closing deadline with traffic padding, pre-book the wheelchair, and check them in online the day before - so the airport morning runs on rails.
