How much should an Indian couple budget for Phuket? Hotels, transport and activities

Build the number from four lines - room, day, transfers, tours - using measured October 2026 medians, not guesses: what a mid-range Phuket week actually costs two people, and the traps that quietly double a day.

Phuket budgets on the internet swing from backpacker arithmetic to brochure fantasy. The honest answer for an Indian couple sits in between, and it is better built than borrowed: four lines - the room, the day, the transfers, the tours - each with a measured price behind it. The figures below come from a price index that re-measures Phuket on the 1st and 15th of every month, in its October 2026 revision, converted at 33.41 baht to the dollar. Prices in baht are what you will actually see; convert to rupees at your card's own rate.

1. The short answer

A comfortable mid-range week in Phuket for two - a four-star room, restaurant dinners mixed with local lunches, taxis when needed, and one proper boat day - costs roughly 1,200 to 1,500 US dollars plus flights, depending mostly on which beach you sleep at. Delhi to Phuket return flights add about 22,000 to 36,000 rupees per person on the nonstop services. The room is the line that moves everything; the rest barely changes by area.

2. Line one: the room

The October 2026 medians per night, two adults, refundable rate: a four-star room is 72 dollars in Patong, 150 in Kata and 120 in Bang Tao. Three-star medians run 45, 74 and 56 dollars respectively; five-star, 156, 194 and 240. Two things to know. First, Patong is genuinely the cheapest place to sleep well - the sois behind the beach road are thick with competing hotels - while Kata's smaller stock prices higher. Second, these are low-season measurements: the index was first read in the wet season, and hotel rates rise from November. Daily spending, by contrast, barely moves with the season, because street food, scooters and massages are priced for residents as much as tourists.

3. Line two: the day

The index prices a fixed daily basket per person, room excluded. Street level - three market or street-food meals, water, a scooter - is 18 dollars a day. Mid level - cafe breakfast, local lunch, mid-range dinner, a coffee, the scooter and one paid extra like a sunbed pair - is 39 dollars in Patong, 38 in Kata, 41 in Bang Tao. Fine level - three restaurant meals, two ride-hailing trips, an hour's oil massage and one activity - is 84 to 99 dollars. Note how flat the mid basket stays across areas: the difference between Patong and Kata is the room, not the meals.

4. Line three: getting there and around

The airport taxi is a fixed-tariff or app-quoted line: about 24 dollars per car to Patong, 29 to Kata, one way, daytime. The budget move is the Phuket Smart Bus down the west coast at about 3 dollars per person - it does not serve Bang Tao directly, where a pre-booked minivan is the practical choice. On the island, scooters are the cheap default at the basket's weekly day-rate; Grab covers point-to-point trips; and the laminated-card tuk-tuk quote is the classic way to double a day without noticing. One more fixed cost: Thai ATMs charge 220 baht per foreign-card withdrawal, so withdraw in two or three large pulls, not daily small ones.

5. Line four: the tours

Three measured medians anchor the activities line. The Phi Phi day trip is 63 dollars per adult, plus the national-park fee collected on the boat. An ethical elephant sanctuary half-day is 88. The cheapest island sampler - Big Buddha plus Old Town in a half-day - is 26. The Similan Islands day, 76 dollars, runs only mid-October to mid-May; in the wet season it does not exist at any price. A couple doing one boat day and one sanctuary visit should hold about 300 dollars for the activities line.

6. Putting it together - and the traps

The arithmetic for a mid-range week in Patong: seven nights at 72, seven days for two at 39 each, two airport taxi rides at 24, one Phi Phi day for two at 63 each - that is 504 + 546 + 48 + 126, about 1,224 dollars before flights, shopping and insurance. The same week in Kata costs roughly 550 dollars more, almost all of it the room. The two traps that bend any budget are not in the lines: the tourist menu with pictures, and the tuk-tuk fare quoted from a laminated card, both of which charge a different Phuket than the one the index measures. Pay local prices, use the meter or the app, and the numbers above are the numbers you will actually spend.

Questions on this article

asked by readers, answered by us

Is Patong cheaper than Kata for hotels?

Yes for the room: the October 2026 four-star median is 72 dollars a night in Patong against 150 in Kata and 120 in Bang Tao. Daily spending on food and transport is nearly identical across areas - the difference between Phuket's beach towns is the hotel line, not the meals.

How much does food and transport cost per day in Phuket?

Per person, excluding the room: about 18 dollars a day at street-food level, 39 at mid-range with restaurant dinners, and 84 or more at restaurant-and-massage level, per the October 2026 Phuket price index. The basket barely changes between Patong, Kata and Bang Tao.

Is Phuket cheaper in the low season?

For hotels, yes - rates fall roughly May to October, and the October 2026 index figures in this guide are low-season measurements, so expect rooms to rise from November. Daily spending on food, scooters and massages barely moves with the season, and some tours like the Similan Islands run only mid-October to mid-May.
