Sarnath is gentler than the ghats: it is a park-like site with ruins and a museum, not a flight of riverfront steps. Still, "manageable" depends on walking distance, shade and where you can sit, and we found no official page that lists those.
1. What is confirmed
- The Varanasi district website places Sarnath 10 km north-east of Varanasi, and 30 km from the airport.
- Incredible India lists the Sarnath Museum as open 10 AM to 5 PM and closed on Fridays. It gives the Dhamekh Stupa as open sunrise to sunset. Another Incredible India Sarnath page lists opening 8 AM to 6 PM, so the hours differ by page. Confirm on the day.
- The Dhamekh Stupa stands 42 metres tall, and the site also has Chaukhandi Stupa, the Ashoka Pillar and Dharmarajika Stupa, according to Incredible India and ASI.
2. What we could not confirm
We found no ASI or tourism page listing ramps, wheelchair loans, seating or restrooms at Sarnath. Do not assume. Ask the ticket counter and your driver when you arrive.
3. Questions to ask
- How far is the walk from the car drop to the Dhamekh Stupa and to the museum?
- Is the path paved and step-free, and where can we sit?
- Are restrooms near the entrance?
- Can the car wait close to the exit?
4. Plan it for slower walkers
- Do the museum and the Dhamekh Stupa, and skip the rest if energy is low.
- Avoid Fridays, since the museum is closed.
- Go in the cooler part of the day, and carry water and a hat.
5. Alternatives
If walking is hard, do the museum alone, which is indoors, and view the stupa from the nearest point. Or pick a shorter ghat boat ride in Varanasi and skip Sarnath.
