Jorhat and Dibrugarh are both Upper Assam tea towns, both have airports, and both get pitched to families as "the quiet one". They are not the same trip. This is a comparison using official pages only, with the numbers we could verify and a clear line where we could not.
1. Distance and getting there
Jorhat's district page puts it about 308 km from Guwahati. Dibrugarh's district page says the city is 435 km east of the state capital, Dispur. That is a gap of well over 100 km on the road, so if you plan to drive from Guwahati, Jorhat is the shorter day. Dibrugarh's Mohanbari airport is about 16 km from the town, according to both the district page and the Airports Authority of India page, and serves Dibrugarh, Tinsukia and Sivasagar. Flights, fares and timings change, so check the airline for your dates.
2. What each one is good for
- Jorhat: a base for Majuli island, Sivasagar's Ahom-era monuments and the Tocklai tea research centre. See our guides on Majuli for senior travellers and Jorhat to Sivasagar.
- Dibrugarh: a tea and oil town on the south bank of the Brahmaputra. The airport page lists Dibru-Saikhowa National Park, Jagannath Temple, Mahatma Gandhi Park and Jokai Botanical Garden as nearby places.
3. Pace
Jorhat gives you more short day trips from one hotel. Dibrugarh is more about the town, the river and a longer outing to a national park. If your parents tire quickly, fewer hotel changes matter more than the name on the booking.
4. Budget
We will not give you a rupee figure. We found no official source for a family cost in either town, and invented averages are how budgets go wrong. Build yours from three lines: transfers (airport and day-trip cabs), hotel nights, and entry and boat charges. Ask for quotes for your dates in both towns and compare the totals.
5. Length of stay
Jorhat works for three days with parents if you keep to two or three sights a day. Dibrugarh needs a day more if you want the national park, since it is a separate outing and not a quick stop.
6. Our pick
First visit to Assam with parents and a short window: Jorhat. Already done the usual circuit and want river and forest time with a longer trip: Dibrugarh.
