Sivasagar was once the capital of the Ahoms, who ruled Assam for more than six hundred years, according to the Sivasagar district website. It sits east of Jorhat and works as a day trip, but only if you accept that you will not see everything. Here is a plan that fits a day without turning it into a race.
1. How far it is
The Sivasagar district page says the nearest airport, Jorhat, is only 55 km away, and that Sivasagar is 363 km east of Guwahati. Jorhat is about 308 km from Guwahati according to its own district page, so the numbers fit. Road time depends on traffic and the road, so ask your driver for an estimate and add a margin. The nearest railhead listed is Simaluguri, 16 km from the town.
2. Pick two or three anchors
- Sivasagar tank and its three temples: the Shivadol, Vishnudol and Devidol were built by Queen Madambika in 1734, per the district page. The Shivadol is described as the highest Shiva temple in India at 104 feet.
- Rang Ghar: an amphitheatre built by King Pramatta Singha, described as a two-storied oval pavilion and one of the largest of its kind in Asia.
- Joysagar: a tank dug in 1707 by Swargodeo Rudra Singha, 318 acres in area, about 4 km west of the town centre, with temples on its north side.
Talatal Ghar is also on the district's list. We have not found its current opening details, so confirm before you plan it into the same day.
3. A realistic day
Leave Jorhat early. Start with the tank and temples in the heart of the town, move to Rang Ghar, then Joysagar. Stop for lunch in town. Start the drive back by mid-afternoon so you are not on the road late. If you add Talatal Ghar, drop Joysagar instead of squeezing in all four.
4. Who this suits
Good for curious travellers who are fine with a long car day and some walking around monuments. For parents, shorten it to the tank and temples plus one more stop, and keep a rest break at lunch.
5. What to confirm
Opening days and entry rules for each monument, whether your driver will wait between stops, and the day's weather. Do not assume every site is open on every day.
Our checklist
Leave early; pick two or three stops; ask for the cab quote in advance; confirm opening days; start back by mid-afternoon. This guide uses the Sivasagar District (Government of Assam) pages checked on 30 October 2026.
