December to April is not one uniform Kandy weather season. January to March have lower average rainfall than December or April in the historical WMO Kandy table, but March is also warmer by its mean daily maximum. Choose your trade-off, then keep a rain plan. A calendar cannot hold an umbrella for you.
Checked 30 October 2026. The WMO World Weather Information Service's Kandy data identify the climate reference period as 1961-1990. These are old climate averages, not predictions for December 2026-April 2027, not a guarantee of dry days and not a current crowd or hotel-price survey.
The five months are different
- December: historical mean daily minimum 19.5°C, maximum 27.8°C; average rainfall 195.7 mm and 14 rain days. Do not call it dry merely because somebody grouped the whole island into “winter sun”.
- January: 18.4-28.3°C; 79.4 mm and 6 rain days in the same table.
- February: 18.5-29.9°C; 74.2 mm and 5 rain days.
- March: 19.7-31.4°C; 71.9 mm and 8 rain days. Lower total rain does not mean the coolest sightseeing.
- April: 21.1-31.1°C; 187.7 mm and 14 rain days. Do not extend February's rainfall pattern into April.
The temperature ranges above pair the monthly mean daily minimum and maximum. They are not recorded extremes or the precise temperatures you will get. A monthly average of rain days does not identify which dates will be wet or how long each shower lasts.
Why March-April needs its own plan
A Department of Meteorology country report hosted by Japan's Meteorological Agency describes December-February as the northeast monsoon and March-April as the first intermonsoon. It describes intermonsoon rainfall as mainly convective thunderstorm activity. This is historical climate explanation, from a 2010 workshop document, not a current warning.
Use that background to avoid scheduling every outdoor item without an alternative. Decide which visit matters most, check the day's forecast and warnings, and be ready to move or drop the garden or lake outing. “We already paid for the car” is not a weather forecast.
Make temple and garden timing work in wet weather
The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic's FAQ publishes daily opening of 05:30-20:00 Sri Lanka time, with service periods 05:30-07:00, 09:30-11:00 and 18:30-20:00. Those are worship times, not verified quiet slots. Ask about current crowds, entrance arrangements and assistance for your visit; do not promise a queue-free morning.
Peradeniya's official garden page publishes 07:30-18:00 opening and 07:30-17:00 ticketing. A delayed arrival after the ticket cutoff is not rescued by the later garden closing time. Pick a shorter visit if conditions and your onward journey allow it; skip it if not. No sheltered end-to-end route or step-free circuit was verified here.
Book the parts that would hurt to change
First settle the actual arrival, suitable accommodation and departure buffer. Ask for the room's final price for your dates, cancellation deadline and the vehicle's waiting or change terms. Keep optional outdoor visits flexible where the provider's terms allow. This check did not establish that a particular month will be cheaper or less crowded.
For a rail arrival, recheck the exact service. A government notice dated 25 October 2026 suspended trains between Rambukkana and Peradeniya/Gampola until further notice; a later reopening was not established in this check. It is a dated travel warning to verify, not a prediction that the line will still be closed during your future holiday.
Before you leave the hotel
- Read a fresh forecast for Kandy, not only Colombo, and check the issue time and validity.
- Check official weather and disaster warnings, road conditions and the operator's actual service.
- Carry rain protection, drinking water and footwear suitable for the conditions you can manage.
- Give each outdoor visit a short version and a clear pickup or return plan.
- If warnings or conditions make the outing unsafe, change the plan. A historical average does not overrule today's warning.
The practical choice is a flexible Kandy visit with the temple as a main anchor and outdoor time adjusted to the day. If lower historical rainfall is your priority within this five-month window, January-March deserve attention, with the warmer March trade-off made explicit. No month earns a rain-free certificate.
