The premise: "How much does Koh Samui cost?" has no single answer because Samui runs three price scales side by side, sometimes on the same street. A night-market dinner is ฿60, a beachfront seafood dinner is ฿500, and both are the real price. So instead of one number, here are the five lines every couple's budget stacks up from - hotel, food, transport, activities, transfers - with current 2026 prices, and three worked totals for a 5-night trip. All baht figures are for two people unless marked per person. Rupee figures use ฿1 = ₹2.82, the rate on 29 October 2026.
The five lines, with 2026 prices
1. Hotel (the biggest line). Budget guesthouses and simple bungalows run ฿650-1,200 a night. Mid-range beachfront resorts - the 3-4 star tier with a pool and breakfast - run ฿1,800-4,500 (a Chaweng or Bophut beach resort typically quotes ฿2,500-4,000). Luxury resorts start around ฿6,000 and run well past ฿15,000. One warning that changes every tier: December-January peak prices run 50-80% above shoulder season, and the best-value mid-range rooms sell out first.
2. Food (the most flexible line). A market-stall plate is ฿50-100 per person, a local open-front Thai restaurant ฿80-250, a mid-range sit-down place ฿150-400, and beachfront seafood ฿200-500. A full evening of grazing at the Fisherman's Village Friday market runs about ฿300-500 per person. A couple eating local all day spends ฿400-1,000; the same couple doing mid-range restaurants spends ฿1,500-2,500.
3. Transport (Samui's sting). There are no metered taxis. The airport's fixed-fare counter charges ฿400-500 per car to Chaweng, Bophut and Bangrak; shared minivans are ฿150-250 per person. Daytime songthaew hops cost ฿50-100 per person. The cheapest fix is a scooter: the island median for a 110-125cc automatic is ฿150-300 a day plus about ฿100-150 in fuel - but read the licence line below before counting this saving.
4. Activities. The signature day trip, Ang Thong Marine Park, costs ฿1,200-2,000 per person on a standard group boat including lunch and snorkelling - check whether the ฿300 park fee is included or collected separately. A Koh Tao + Koh Nang Yuan snorkel day runs about ฿2,400 per person. A one-hour beach-road Thai massage is ฿300-500. And the best of Samui is free: Big Buddha, Wat Plai Laem, every beach, the night markets, Hin Ta and Hin Yai rocks.
5. The forgotten lines. Airport transfers both ways (฿300-1,000 for two, depending on mode), scooter deposit (฿1,000-3,000 cash, returned), travel insurance, and the ฿220 fee Thai ATMs charge foreign cards per withdrawal. Indians currently get a 60-day visa exemption on arrival, so no visa fee - but carry a pen for the arrival card and keep ₹15,000-20,000 equivalent accessible in case an immigration officer asks for funds.
Three worked totals for 5 nights (2 people, excluding flights)
Frugal - about ฿11,500 (₹32,000): guesthouse at ฿900/night (฿4,500), all-local food (฿4,500), scooter for 4 days plus fuel (฿1,500), shared minivan from the airport (฿300), one massage each (฿600), everything else free. This tier is genuinely comfortable on Samui - the free stuff is the good stuff.
Comfortable - about ฿31,000 (₹87,000): mid-range beachfront resort at ฿3,000/night (฿15,000), mixed local and restaurant food (฿9,000), scooter plus a couple of taxi transfers (฿2,500), the Ang Thong day trip for two with park fees (฿3,800), two massages (฿800). This is the tier most Indian couples land in.
Premium - about ฿77,000 (₹2,17,000): luxury resort at ฿8,000/night (฿40,000), restaurant and beach-club dining (฿20,000), private transfers and taxis (฿3,000), speedboat day trips (฿4,800), a private sunset cruise (฿3,500), a proper spa session each (฿6,000).
What actually moves your number
Season first. A December-January trip costs 50-80% more on hotels than October-November or February-March shoulder weeks. The weather trade-off: Samui's dry season runs roughly December to April, with its own rain pattern opposite to Phuket's.
The scooter decision. Renting one saves ฿1,500-3,000 over a 5-night trip versus taxis - but Thai law requires a motorcycle licence from home plus an International Driving Permit, and the helmet fine is up to ฿2,000 per person since June 2025. Police checkpoints near Chaweng and Fisherman's Village are routine. No licence means no saving: taxis and songthaews it is.
Flights are the wild card. Samui's airport is Bangkok Airways' monopoly, and direct flights from Bangkok price accordingly. Flying into Surat Thani and taking the bus-ferry combo cuts the fare substantially - we have a separate route guide for that decision. Either way, flights from India are the one line this article cannot fix: book them first, then build the five lines above around what's left.
Saving levers that don't hurt
Stay Bophut or Maenam instead of Chaweng (same beach quality, lower room rates). Eat one market meal a day. Book Ang Thong as the standard group boat, not the speedboat - same islands, ฿600-800 cheaper each. Withdraw cash once in a large amount rather than paying the ฿220 ATM fee five times. And skip the hotel breakfast upsell if a market is nearby - ฿80 of khao tom and fruit beats a ฿400 buffet.
