Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi: flight, train and road combinations that actually make sense

A one-hour flight or an eight-to-ten-hour train-and-ferry odyssey - the KL to Langkawi choice is really about what your holiday day is worth. The honest breakdown of airlines, the ETS train to Arau, ferry timings and the connections that actually work.

The short answer: fly

There is no bridge to Langkawi. Every route from Kuala Lumpur ends either at Langkawi's airport (LGK) or at Kuah Jetty by ferry - and the difference between those two endings is roughly seven hours of your holiday. A direct flight takes about 1 hour 5 minutes gate to gate in the air; the fastest overland combination (train, taxi, ferry) takes eight to ten hours door to door. Unless the journey itself is the point, fly.

Flying: the option almost everyone should take

Three airlines fly direct from Kuala Lumpur International Airport to Langkawi, with well over a hundred nonstop flights a week between them:

  • AirAsia - the frequency king, around ten flights a day from KLIA Terminal 2, from about 8:25 AM to 8 PM.
  • Malaysia Airlines - about five flights a day from KLIA Terminal 1.
  • Batik Air Malaysia - one to three flights a day, also from Terminal 1, with some departures from Subang (Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport), the city airport closer to town.

Scheduled flight time is 1 hour 5 to 1 hour 15 minutes over 457 km. Recent typical one-way fares have run roughly USD 45-110 (about RM 200-500) depending on airline and how early you book - promo fares go to the early bookers, and checked baggage is extra on AirAsia. For an Indian family of four, even mid-range fares usually beat the combined cost of four train tickets, taxis and ferry tickets, before you count the lost day.

Overland: ETS train + ferry, for the journey-lovers

The overland route is real, scenic in parts, and entirely doable - as long as you treat the ferry, not the train, as the fixed point. The combination that works:

  • ETS train, KL Sentral to Arau - about 4 hours 33 minutes on the Express service to 5 hours 20 on Gold, roughly RM 73-133 one way depending on class, service and how early you book under KTM's Flexi fares.
  • Taxi from Arau station to Kuala Perlis jetty - about 18 km, 20-30 minutes, around RM 25-30.
  • Ferry from Kuala Perlis to Kuah, Langkawi - about 1 hour 15 minutes, RM 45 one way for foreign passport holders since April 2026.

The alternative is the train to Alor Setar (about 40 minutes shorter), then a short taxi or bus ride to the Kuala Kedah jetty, whose ferry takes about 1 hour 45 minutes and costs RM 55. The Kuala Perlis route is the better default: shorter ferry, less time on the water if anyone gets seasick.

The catch: the ferry now decides everything

Since March 2026 the ferry operator has run only about three sailings a day per route, down from five or more, after a diesel price shock - and there is no announced end date. This changes the planning logic completely:

  • Check the ferry operator's current timetable first, then pick a train that lands you in Arau with 60-90 minutes of buffer before a sailing. Never book the train first.
  • Miss the last sailing and you are overnighting on the mainland - Arau and Kuala Perlis are not places you want to improvise a night in.
  • Holiday sailings are sometimes added at short notice, so re-check the timetable a few days before travel even after booking.
  • Total overland budget: about eight to ten hours door to door, and roughly RM 150-250 per person all-in. It saves real money only for solo travellers or pairs booking late flights.

What actually makes sense

  • Families, seniors, short trips: fly. The time and certainty are worth more than the fare difference, and Langkawi airport is a short taxi ride from the main beach strip at Pantai Cenang.
  • Budget solo travellers with a free day: the train-and-ferry is an adventure with a story, as long as the ferry timetable is your first booking, not your last.
  • Anyone combining Penang: note the overland route passes Butterworth and Alor Setar, so a KL - Penang - Langkawi rail-and-ferry arc is the one itinerary where overland genuinely beats backtracking to fly.

Bottom line

Book a direct flight from KLIA, ideally on the airline whose terminal and baggage rules suit you, and spend the saved day on Langkawi's beaches instead of its ferry schedules. If you do go overland, treat the ferry sailing as the immovable object and let everything else - train, taxi, lunch - orbit around it.

Questions on this article

asked by readers, answered by us

Should I fly or take the train and ferry to Langkawi?

Fly, for almost everyone. The direct flight is 1 hour 5-15 minutes; train plus taxi plus ferry is 8-10 hours door to door. For families the total cost often works out equal or cheaper by air too. Choose overland only if the journey itself is the treat, or if you are building a KL - Penang - Langkawi rail-and-ferry arc.

Which Kuala Lumpur airport do Langkawi flights use?

Most flights leave from KLIA: AirAsia from Terminal 2, Malaysia Airlines and Batik Air from Terminal 1. Batik Air and Firefly also run some departures from Subang (SZB), the city airport. Check the airport and terminal on your ticket before travel day - KLIA and Subang are on opposite sides of the city.

How do I connect the ETS train to the Langkawi ferry?

Work backwards: check the ferry operator's current timetable first, then book the train. Since March 2026 each ferry route runs only about three sailings a day, so pick an ETS that reaches Arau 60-90 minutes before a sailing, add the 20-30 minute taxi to Kuala Perlis jetty, and re-check the timetable a few days before travel. Missing the last ferry can mean an unplanned night on the mainland.
