Kyoto in March-April is Japan's most beautiful fortnight attached to its most expensive hotel rooms. The trade is worth making only with eyes open: here is the weather, what 2026's blossoms actually did, and the booking order that matters.
The weather, month by month
March is still winter's tail in Kyoto: average high 11.3 C, low 2.4 C, and one of the wetter months. Kyoto sits in a basin, so mornings bite colder than Osaka's a few kilometers away. April turns genuinely pleasant: high 16.5 C, low 6.7 C, longer daylight, and the city's gardens at their best. Pack a real coat for March, layers and a light jacket for April, and an umbrella for both.
What the 2026 blossoms did
The JMA's Kyoto observatory declared first bloom (kaika) on March 23, 2026 - three days earlier than the March 26 average - and full bloom (mankai) on March 30, versus an April 4 average. That is the planning anchor: Kyoto's peak sits between Tokyo's (March 28 full bloom) and Osaka's (first bloom March 26), so a classic Golden Route trip starting in Tokyo around March 25 catches each city in sequence. The reliable blossom spots - Philosopher's Path, Maruyama Park, the Kamo riverbanks - are free; the temples' gardens are 400-500 yen.
The crowd and price trade-off
Kyoto in blossom week runs the highest hotel rates of the Japanese year: Hotel Bank's October 2026 survey already puts the city's average business double at 21,942 yen - above Tokyo's - and blossom weeks sit far above the average. Early March is the value window (plum blossoms at Kitano Tenmangu instead of cherry). Mid-April is the quiet shoulder: green maples, thinner crowds, lower rates. Golden Week (April 29-May 6, 2026) compresses domestic travel into the temples again.
What to book first
Hotels first, and earlier than you think - blossom-week rooms in the center are effectively gone by winter. Shinkansen seats second if you are arriving from Tokyo during the peak: JR Central makes all Nozomi seats reserved-only in 2026 peak periods. Third, any experience with limited capacity: tea ceremonies, shojin ryori temple lunches, kimono rentals for the blossom photos. Temples themselves need no booking - Kiyomizu opens 6:00, Fushimi Inari never closes, and the early hour beats any reservation.
