Why Tanjung Rhu is worth leaving Cenang for
Tanjung Rhu, on Langkawi's northeast coast about 22 km north of Kuah, is the island's great quiet beach: a wide arc of soft white sand shaded by the casuarina trees it is named after, calm shallow water, and a horizon dotted with islands - on clear days you can see Thailand's Ko Tarutao. Where Cenang hums with jet skis and beach bars, Tanjung Rhu on a weekday morning can feel nearly private. It is the one beach on Langkawi that is genuinely worth the drive.
The honest transport math
There is no public transport on Langkawi, so the day hinges on wheels. From Pantai Cenang, allow 40-50 minutes by car or scooter; from Kuah, about 30. A rental car or scooter is the flexible choice - parking at the beach is easy. Grab (the regional ride-hailing app) works for the ride up, but return pickups from Tanjung Rhu can be thin, so either arrange a pickup time with your driver on the way out or plan to leave with the afternoon crowd. A half-day hired driver is the comfortable option for families.
A realistic day plan
- 8:30 - Leave Cenang (or Kuah) and drive north.
- 9:15 - Kilim Geoforest mangrove boat tour from the Kilim jetty, ten minutes from Tanjung Rhu. Morning departures get the calmest water and the active eagles. Two hours on the water is the standard loop; the fish-farm lunch can wait for later.
- 11:30 - Short drive to Tanjung Rhu beach.
- 11:45-14:00 - Swim, walk the sandbar shallows, sit under the casuarinas. This is the quiet window before the afternoon.
- 14:00 - Lunch: the resorts on the beach (the Four Seasons and Tanjung Rhu Resort) have the polished options, and the jetty area has simpler local seafood spots.
- 15:00-16:30 - Second beach session or a slow drive back via the north-coast viewpoints; if the SkyCab is on your list it is a small detour west on the return leg.
- 17:30 - Back in Cenang for sunset.
What the beach is actually like
Shallow and calm in the dry season (December-March is the prime window), with long sandbars at low tide that let you walk far out into warm knee-deep water. There is almost nothing to rent and little to buy - bring water, snacks and reef-safe sunscreen. Shade from the casuarinas is free and generous. Facilities are minimal away from the resorts; use the restroom where you have lunch.
Who should skip it
Anyone whose Langkawi idea is beach clubs, water sports and people-watching should stay in Cenang - Tanjung Rhu is deliberately uneventful. And on wet-season afternoons the north coast gets the weather first, so check the sky before committing the drive.
Bottom line
Pair the Kilim mangrove morning with a Tanjung Rhu afternoon and you have Langkawi's best single day trip: the island's wildest water and its quietest beach, ten minutes apart, back in time for a Cenang sunset.
