Phuket or Krabi for an Indian family holiday? Compare pace, travel and budget

Phuket is the full-service beach holiday - direct flights, family resorts, choice everywhere. Krabi is the scenery play - Railay's cliffs, island hopping, roughly 15-20% cheaper. A side-by-side on transfers, beaches, budget bands and how long to stay.

Both are Thailand's Andaman coast, both share the same November-to-April dry season, and both deliver turquoise water - so weather will not settle this. What settles it is the shape of the holiday: Phuket is Thailand's most developed beach destination, with direct flights from India, over a hundred family resorts and a different beach for every mood; Krabi is the dramatic limestone scenery and a quieter, cheaper base where the best days are boat days. Here is the side-by-side that matters for an Indian family.

1. The short answer

Choose Phuket if you want the easy, full-service holiday: direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore, family beaches like Kata and Karon, kids' clubs, Grab taxis everywhere, and enough restaurants and malls to fill a rainy afternoon. Choose Krabi if the limestone scenery is the point, your family is happy on boats, and you would rather pay 15-20% less for a quieter base. If you have six nights or more, the strongest answer is often both - they are a few hours apart.

2. The side-by-side

Flights from India: Phuket wins clearly, with frequent direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore into HKT. Krabi's airport (KBV) is mainly a 1.5-hour hop from Bangkok, with limited direct India connectivity - though routes like Mumbai-Krabi are expanding in 2026, so check current schedules. Transfers on the ground: Phuket has Grab across the island and roads to every beach (₹600-1,000 per trip between beaches); Krabi runs on longtail boats and songthaews, and Grab works mainly in Ao Nang - KBV airport to Ao Nang is about 40 minutes. Family infrastructure: Phuket has 100+ family resorts with kids' clubs and waterslides; Krabi has 30+ with fewer kids' facilities. Daily budget: roughly ฿1,500 versus ฿1,300 on a budget day, ฿4,000 versus ฿3,500 mid-range. Crowds: very high in Phuket, high in Krabi.

3. Beaches and days out

Phuket's 40-kilometre coast is about choice. Kata is the best family beach - soft sand, gentle waves in the dry season, lifeguards on duty, and a gradual slope into the water for children learning to swim. Karon stretches 3 km next door, wider and less crowded. Patong is the busy zone: fine for teenagers, usually avoided by families with young children. Krabi's beaches are fewer and more dramatic. Railay is reachable only by a 15-minute longtail from Ao Nang (₹200-300 per person, boats every 30 minutes), with calm shallow water and cliffs framing every photo; Ao Nang itself is the practical family base - supermarkets, pharmacies, tour agencies and restaurants within walking distance, even if the beach is ordinary. For island hopping, Krabi is closer to Phi Phi, the Four Islands, Hong Island and Koh Lanta - ferries to Phi Phi start around ฿450 and take 30 minutes to 2 hours. Phuket counters with the one trip Krabi cannot match: the Similan Islands, open mid-October to mid-May.

4. What an Indian family actually spends

Krabi runs about 15-20% cheaper overall. Mid-range family rooms go for roughly ₹4,000-12,000 a night in Phuket against ₹3,000-9,000 for similar quality in Krabi. Food runs about ₹800-1,500 per person per day in Phuket against ₹600-1,200 in Krabi, and local transport costs less too - with one exception: Railay, where everything arrives by boat and is priced that way. Phuket's premium buys infrastructure: lifeguarded beaches, international hospitals, malls, Indian restaurants and the comfort of getting anything at any hour. Krabi's saving buys calm: smaller town, slower evenings, and the money left over funds another boat day.

5. Length of stay, and who should pick which

Phuket fits four to six nights comfortably - two or three beach days at Kata or Karon, a Phi Phi or Similan day trip, an Old Town evening. Krabi fits three to five: Railay and Phra Nang one day, a Four Islands or Hong Island boat day, and downtime in Ao Nang. With toddlers, Phuket's kids' clubs and lifeguarded beaches tip it. With teenagers, Phuket's activity density wins again. With grandparents, Phuket's Grab-everywhere logistics are easier - but if the grandparents are boat-happy, Krabi's gentler town is lovely. Pick Krabi outright when the holiday is about scenery and your family treats boat rides as fun rather than transfers. And if you cannot decide: split the trip, three nights each, with the Phuket-Krabi transfer (about 2-3 hours by road or ferry) booked as a travel morning, not a wasted day.

Questions on this article

asked by readers, answered by us

Which is better for an Indian family holiday, Phuket or Krabi?

Phuket for most families: frequent direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore, 100+ family resorts with kids' clubs, lifeguarded family beaches like Kata and Karon, and Grab taxis everywhere. Krabi suits families who came for the scenery and boat days - Railay's limestone cliffs, island hopping to Phi Phi and Hong Island - from a quieter base about 15-20% cheaper. With six nights or more, splitting the trip three-and-three works well.

Is Krabi cheaper than Phuket?

Yes, roughly 15-20% overall. A mid-range family room runs about ₹3,000-9,000 a night in Krabi against ₹4,000-12,000 in Phuket; food is about ₹600-1,200 per person daily against ₹800-1,500; daily budgets run about ฿1,300 versus ฿1,500 (budget) and ฿3,500 versus ฿4,000 (mid-range). The exception is Railay, where everything arrives by boat and is priced accordingly.

Can you combine Phuket and Krabi in one trip?

Yes - they are about 2-3 hours apart by road or ferry, and many families split the trip: three nights in Phuket for the resorts, beaches and Similan or Phi Phi day trip, then three in Krabi for Railay and island hopping from Ao Nang. Book the transfer as a travel morning, and fly into one airport and out of the other if your flight options allow it.
