AI illustration: a fictional traveller compares a generic phone and SIM. It does not show a particular device, carrier interface or product.

Choose the plan’s functions before choosing its SIM format. A physical SIM and an eSIM can both carry data-only products; an eSIM can also be offered with calls and SMS. Your exact phone, whether it is carrier-locked, the registration route and the validity clock matter more than a blanket “eSIM is better” answer.

Start with your actual phone

Apple’s international eSIM guidance lists iPhone requirements and regional exceptions. It says another carrier’s travel plan requires an unlocked iPhone. Do not use a broad model list as proof for every phone bought in every market. Check your exact model and country variant with the phone maker and chosen carrier.

On iPhone, Apple’s lock check is Settings → General → About: “No SIM restrictions” beside Carrier Lock means unlocked. Only the current carrier can unlock it. A different SIM format is not a way around a carrier lock.

For an Android example, Airalo’s setup guide requires an eSIM-compatible, network-unlocked device and a stable connection, preferably Wi-Fi. It notes that direct installation is available on some Android models, not all. Follow the instructions for the actual phone and provider.

Compare functions, not the chip

A named Singapore example shows why format alone is misleading. On M1’s Tourist SIM page, checked 27 October 2026, physical SIM and eSIM options are advertised. The data-only offer explicitly says it cannot make or receive calls or send or receive SMS. A separate retailer-only physical-SIM offer lists local outgoing minutes and local SMS. These are different products, not a rule that all physical SIMs include voice.

M1’s tourist guidance on its roaming page also describes Tourist SIM/eSIM purchases with incoming calls and SMS. That makes the point in the other direction: eSIM does not always mean data-only. Read the exact product’s call/SMS lines, registration requirements and collection instructions, not just the word eSIM.

Our decision rule: if ordinary local phone calls or SMS are essential, ask whether this exact offer provides them. If you only need internet apps, compare data coverage and setup instead. Do not assume a travel data plan replaces the functions of a home number.

Separate purchase, installation, registration and usable service

M1 says Tourist prepaid service activates automatically after successful registration. Its FAQ requires registration and accepted identification, and distinguishes physical-store registration deadlines from the expiry date supplied in an online purchase confirmation. For its tourist voice/SMS route, M1’s instructions say to bring identification and the redemption code from the confirmation email to a pickup point after arrival; successful registration supplies the physical SIM or eSIM QR code and mobile number.

So “digital” need not mean no in-person step. Before buying, check whether the exact order is self-registration, online verification or collection, which documents are accepted, and whether you will have a connection to download the profile.

Read the validity policy before installing early

Airalo’s expiry guidance says most of its eSIMs activate when they connect to the supported destination network, but some activate at installation regardless of location. The package’s activation policy is the deciding source. Do not copy one provider’s rule onto another product.

The M1 Tourist FAQ gives specified Tourist plans a validity period counted from registration; its passport-registration section also warns that a foreign-passport SIM ends after 30 days unless eligible local identification is updated as described. A plan balance, registration life and installation date are not interchangeable clocks. For a short holiday, save the order’s own start and expiry information rather than estimating from flight day.

Check the recovery route, not just easy installation

The M1 FAQ says a deleted Tourist eSIM profile cannot be restored and generally needs a new Tourist SIM; it separately gives a chat route for the $13 data-only eSIM. It also says a Tourist eSIM cannot be converted into a physical SIM and directs QR-code problems to an M1 Shop. These are product-specific support limits, not universal eSIM rules.

Our advice is to save the provider’s support route and order reference privately. Do not delete a profile as an improvised troubleshooting step. Keep any small physical SIM secure if you remove it, and check the phone’s tray/format support rather than assuming every phone takes a removable SIM.

A practical choice for a short trip

  • If the exact phone is unlocked and eSIM-compatible, the selected plan has the functions you need, and you can complete registration and installation, eSIM avoids handling another small card.
  • If your phone supports the required physical SIM but not the selected eSIM service, or you prefer staff-assisted setup, investigate a physical offer and its real collection route. It still needs compatibility and registration checks.
  • If calls/SMS, activation timing or device support is unclear, settle that before purchase. A cheap-looking plan that cannot do the needed job is not a useful comparison winner.

Sources and scope

Apple, M1 and Airalo sources checked 27 October 2026. M1 is a worked Singapore example, not a global plan recommendation. This guide makes no cheapest, universal compatibility, guaranteed coverage or no-fee replacement claim. It is about format/product choice, not roaming-switch settings or retaining Indian OTP service.

Questions on this article

asked by readers, answered by us

Does eSIM always mean data-only?

No. Read the exact product. M1 describes Tourist SIM/eSIM offers with calls and SMS as well as a separate data-only offer. The format alone does not decide the functions.

Can I install any travel eSIM early without losing days?

No. Airalo says some plans start at destination-network connection, while others start at installation. Check the selected package’s own activation policy before installing.

Should I delete a travel eSIM if it stops working?

Do not use deletion as an improvised fix. Check the provider’s recovery rules first. M1’s Tourist FAQ says deleted profiles generally cannot be restored and gives a separate support route for its data-only eSIM.
