The geography, honestly
Sao Beach (Bai Sao) and the Hon Thom cable car are both in Phu Quoc's far south - but on opposite coasts of the tip. The beach faces the calm southeast; the cable car leaves from Anh Duong station in Sunset Town on the southwest side. Between them is roughly 15-20 minutes by road, and both are about 25 km from Duong Dong town, so the pair makes one excellent southern day - if you respect the cable car's split timetable.
Tickets and costs
- Sao Beach: free and public. Expect small informal charges instead - scooter or car parking, and sun-lounger or umbrella rental from the beach restaurants. No booking, no gate.
- Cable car (from 1 January 2026): adults 850,000 VND round trip; children 1-1.4 m tall 700,000 VND; under 1 m free. The ticket bundles entry to Sun World Hon Thom, Exotica Village and one Aquatopia water-park entry, plus a drink coupon; a combo with the Mango restaurant lunch buffet costs 1,150,000 VND per adult.
- The strict part: prepaid cable-car tickets cannot be changed to another date or type after payment, cancellation costs 100 percent, tickets are valid one day for one entry, and you must keep the return half - staff may check it coming back.
- Buy the cable car online in advance (QR code from the confirmation email); the Anh Duong station counter backs up on peak days.
The timing plan that works
- 7:30-10:30 AM - Sao Beach first. Early morning means calm, clear water, soft light and the beach largely to yourself; tour groups arrive from mid-morning. The November-April dry season gives the east coast its flattest, clearest sea.
- Late morning - ride 15-20 minutes across the tip to Sunset Town for lunch. This absorbs the cable car's long midday break instead of fighting it.
- 1:30 PM - catch the cable car's short early-afternoon window (roughly 13:30-14:00), enjoy Hon Thom in the afternoon, and return inside the 15:30-17:30 window. There is no crossing during the gaps - if you miss the afternoon window you wait, and if you miss the last return you have a real problem.
- Windows shift with weather, maintenance and season - Sun World's current official pattern is roughly 9:30-11:30, 13:30-14:00 and 15:30-17:30, but confirm the day's times at the station or online before you fix the beach plan.
Transfers: the part nobody plans
- There is no shuttle between Sao Beach and the cable car station. Options are Grab or a taxi (usually findable in the south, but thin at dusk), a pre-arranged driver for the half day, or your own scooter.
- A hired driver for the whole southern loop is the least stressful shape: beach drop, wait, transfer, station drop, and a guaranteed ride back after the last cable car - when Sunset Town is busy and cars are scarce.
- Do not plan to "walk between" anything: distances in the south are road distances, and the midday sun is serious.
Beach-day small print
- Starfish: Sao Beach's shallows are famous for them - look, photograph in the water, but never lift them out; even brief air exposure harms them.
- Facilities: restrooms and showers come with the beach restaurants (small fee or a purchase), not as public infrastructure.
- Sea conditions: in the dry season the swimming is calm and shallow; outside it, the east coast can pick up chop and rain - the cable car, flying above the sea, is the weather-proof half of the day, though it too pauses in strong wind or storms.
- Sandflies can appear around dusk on the sand - another reason the beach-first, cable-car-second order works so well.
Honest verdict
Beach morning, cable car afternoon is one of Phu Quoc's best single days - as long as the day is built around the cable car's windows and a sorted transfer, not the other way round. Lock the cable-car ticket first, then let the beach take whatever morning is left. You will not regret the order.
