Planning tea gardens and Majuli island in one trip: timing, ticketing and hidden complications

Tea gardens are a Jorhat half-day. Majuli needs a ferry crossing that stops in the afternoon. Here is how to fit both without missing the last boat.

Tea gardens and Majuli look like one easy "Jorhat trip" on a map. In practice the river sets the schedule. The ferry has fixed hours, and a late tea-estate lunch can cost you the last crossing. Here is how to order the days.

1. Know the ferry window first

The Majuli district page says Assam Inland Water Transport ferries for Jorhat-Majuli run from 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM. It names the crossing as Nimatighat in Jorhat to Kamalabarighat or Afalamukh Ghat on Majuli. Timings have changed with the season and river level in the past, so confirm the current schedule before you fix a date. We are not quoting a fare, since we found no official figure.

2. Tickets

The same page tells visitors to book ferry tickets online in advance. The Assam government's Sewa Setu portal has an "Online Ferry Ticket Booking" service where you need your source and destination and a valid mobile number. Check whether it covers your crossing and date, and keep a backup plan if it does not.

3. Where tea fits

Tocklai Tea Research Institute, founded in 1911 and described on the Jorhat district site as the world's largest and oldest tea research centre, sits on the southeast edge of Jorhat. It has a tea museum and a model tea factory. Do not put it on the same morning as a Majuli crossing. Give tea its own half day, ideally the day you arrive or the day you return.

4. Suggested order

  • Day 1: arrive in Jorhat, Tocklai or a tea garden visit, early night.
  • Day 2: early ferry to Majuli. The district page suggests satras such as Auniati, Dakhinpat or Kamalabari, plus Samaguri for mask-making.
  • Day 3: Majuli birds, villages or crafts, then the ferry back well before the last crossing.

5. Hidden complications

An overnight on Majuli removes the ferry stress. The district page lists cottages, homestays and guest houses on the island. If you only do a day trip, you are racing the 3:30 PM end of service, which is not a plan for parents. Also ask your driver whether the car crosses, or whether you will need transport on the island.

Our checklist

Confirm ferry schedule; book tickets if available; keep tea separate from the crossing day; stay a night on Majuli; leave margin for the last ferry. Sources checked on 30 October 2026.

Questions on this article

asked by readers, answered by us

What are the Jorhat to Majuli ferry hours?

The Majuli district page says 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM. Confirm the current schedule before your date, as it has changed with seasons before.

Can I do tea gardens and Majuli on the same day?

It is a bad idea. The ferry stops in the afternoon, so give tea its own half day.

Where do I book the Majuli ferry?

The district page advises booking online in advance. The Sewa Setu portal lists an online ferry ticket service. Check that it covers your crossing.
