Winter is the season people mean when they say "best time for Puri". It is also the season everyone else picks. Here is what the official numbers say, and what that means for what you book first.
1. Temperature, month by month
Incredible India's Puri page lists monthly ranges: November 17.6 to 32.4 C, December 14.7 to 30.4 C, January 13.8 to 30.0 C and February 16.8 to 31.9 C. So winter days are still warm, and the cool part is early morning and evening. It does not turn cold. Pack light cotton, plus one thin layer for the evenings by the sea.
2. Rain
The India Meteorological Department's normal monthly rainfall for Puri is 48.8 mm in November, 7.9 mm in December, 8.2 mm in January and 17.9 mm in February. November is the wettest of the four. These are long-term normals, not a forecast, so check a live forecast close to your dates.
3. Crowds
Odisha Tourism's FAQ says winter, from December to February, is the peak tourist season in the state, especially for beaches, temples and festivals. Its best-time page calls October to March the golden season. Peak season means busier temple queues and tighter hotel supply. If your dates are flexible, early November or late February trade a little weather for less pressure, though we have no official crowd data to prove it.
4. What to book first
- Hotel for your exact dates, since this is the limited resource.
- The transfer from Bhubaneswar, covered in our route guide.
- Then plan temple timings and rules, from our itinerary guide.
5. The trade-off
December to January gives the driest, mildest days and the most visitors. November is warmer and a bit wetter. February sits between them. There is no perfect month here, only the one whose downside you mind least.
