Puri to Chilika Lake as a day trip: what a realistic itinerary looks like

1. Which part of Chilika from Puri

The Chilika Development Authority lists the lake's access points as Balugaon, Barkul and Rambha on NH 5, and Satapada close to Puri. From Puri you go to Satapada. The district tourism page says Irrawaddy dolphins are the main draw there, along with the sea mouth and islands such as Nalabana, Honeymoon, Breakfast and Rajhans. The CDA warns that the dolphin is shy and you usually see only a tail or head.

2. Travel time

We found no official page that gives a clear Puri to Satapada distance or drive time. The Puri district page copies a "50 km" line from its temple page, so do not rely on it. Odisha Tourism's Satapada tour leaves from Panthanivas in Puri and is listed as 7 AM to 7 PM, which tells you how it frames the day. Ask your driver for the actual drive time and add margin for traffic.

3. A sample schedule

• Leave Puri early, so you reach Satapada well before midday.
• Report at the boat entry point 20 minutes before your boat time. The boat association's rules ask for this.
• Take the boat ride. Budget an hour at minimum.
• Eat at Satapada, then start back with daylight to spare.
• Keep the evening free. Do not plan a temple visit or a train on the same night.

Odisha Tourism has also listed a "Chilika (Satapada), Puri and back" package that puts the cruise from 7 AM to 2 PM, then Jagannath Temple from 2 PM to 5 PM and the beach to 7 PM. That is a 2019 listing, so confirm it still runs before you count on it.

4. Boat prices

The Dolphin Motor Boat Association at Satapada lists a one-hour boat at Rs 1,300 per boat, with a lower Rs 1,170 shown alongside, and a longer trip with the sea beach at Rs 2,400, with Rs 2,160 shown. A boat takes up to 6 adults and 2 children. Extra persons, picnics and other items cost extra. This is the operators' own site, not a government page, so confirm the price and what the lower figure means at the counter.

5. Season and what to carry

The CDA gives October to February as the best season, and the district page says migratory birds winter on the lake. The boat rules ask you to carry water, a cap and sunglasses, ban plastic and smoking, and say not to feed birds or animals.
