Puri is a seafood town on the Bay of Bengal, so "vegetarian" needs a plan here. The good news is that the temple's own food is the easy answer. For the rest, you need a few questions ready.
1. What Mahaprasad is
Odisha Tourism describes Mahaprasad, also called Abadha, as the food offered to Lord Jagannath at the temple. It is cooked in the temple kitchen in stacked earthen pots over wood fires. The ingredients listed are rice, lentils, seasonal vegetables, ghee, ginger, cumin, black pepper, turmeric, jaggery, coconut, milk and curd, and the page says everything is prepared without onion or garlic. The temple administration says the items include cooked rice, dal, vegetable curry, sweets and cakes.
2. Where to find it
The temple administration says Mahaprasad is sold at Ananda Bazar, on the north-east corner of the temple's outer enclosure. Odisha Tourism lists it as the place to try it. Since you have to go through the temple's rules to reach it, read our itinerary guide on phones, footwear and dress before you go. Opening hours and any rules on takeaway change, so ask at the temple. The administration has said Mahaprasad cannot be sold online.
3. What it contains
It is vegetarian, but it uses ghee, milk, curd and cheese, so it is not vegan. If you avoid dairy for any reason, ask before you buy. The administration also lists dry sweets made with sugar, jaggery, wheat flour, ghee and milk, and says tourists often carry home Khaja and dried rice Nirmalya.
4. Everywhere else in Puri
Incredible India's Puri page highlights seafood from the Bay of Bengal, alongside dishes like chenna poda, a baked cottage cheese sweet. Restaurants can be mixed kitchens. Ask these before you order:
- "Is this fully vegetarian, with no fish, egg or meat stock?"
- "Is it cooked in the same oil or on the same tawa as fish?"
- "Is there onion or garlic?" if you avoid them.
We do not name restaurants we have not checked.
5. Simple rule
Eat at the temple for the sure thing, and in town pick pure vegetarian places and ask the three questions anyway.
