RAC vs Waitlist: What Is the Difference for Train Travel?

RAC means you can board the train and get sitting accommodation, with a berth if confirmed passengers do not show up. A fully waitlisted e-ticket means you cannot board at all once the chart is prepared, and IRCTC cancels and refunds it. Here is the difference, the chart rules, and the refund maths.

RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) means you can board the train: you get sitting accommodation first and a berth if confirmed passengers do not turn up. A waitlisted ticket is a queue position, and a fully waitlisted e-ticket that stays waitlisted after the reservation chart is prepared is dropped from the chart: you cannot board, and IRCTC cancels it and arranges the refund. That is the whole difference, and it decides whether you go to the station at all.

The two codes look similar on a PNR status screen, which is why they get confused. They are not similar. One is a seat with conditions, the other is a hope with a number.

What RAC actually means

RAC stands for Reservation Against Cancellation, and Indian Railways prints the status right on your ticket. The Railway Board's own reservation FAQ says it plainly: you can board the train with an RAC ticket. You are given sitting accommodation at the start, and you are allotted a berth during the journey if confirmed passengers do not turn up.

So an RAC ticket is a legal, boardable ticket. You are not sneaking on, you are not at the TTE's mercy, and your name goes on the reservation chart. IRCTC's e-ticket rules confirm that passengers who are fully RAC after chart preparation appear in the charts and can undertake their journey.

One quiet bonus from the same Railway Board FAQ: when the chart is prepared, vacant Tatkal accommodation is released to RAC and waitlisted passengers, and no Tatkal charges are taken from them.

What a waitlisted ticket means

A waitlisted ticket means there is no accommodation for you yet. Your WL number is your position in the queue, and as other people cancel, you move up: WL to RAC to CNF. If the queue moves enough before the chart is prepared, you are travelling. If it does not, the ending depends on your ticket type.

For e-tickets, the rule is strict. IRCTC states that passengers left fully waitlisted after chart preparation are dropped from the charts, are not allowed to board, and will be treated as travelling without a ticket if detected on the train. Their e-tickets are cancelled by IRCTC after chart preparation and the refund is arranged from the Railways and credited electronically.

Partially waitlisted tickets work differently. If some passengers on your booking are confirmed or RAC and others are waitlisted, IRCTC says all their names appear in the chart, including the waitlisted ones.

What happens when the chart is prepared

The reservation chart is the final list. Per IRCTC's e-ticket rules:

  • Fully confirmed or fully RAC: your names appear in the chart and you can travel.
  • Partly confirmed or partly RAC with some waitlisted: all names appear, including the waitlisted passengers.
  • Fully waitlisted: names are dropped, boarding is not allowed, and the e-ticket is cancelled automatically with a refund arranged.

Timing matters for cancellations too. You can cancel an e-ticket online yourself only before chart preparation. After the chart is prepared, cancellation claims go by email to etickets@irctc.co.in with the full ticket details, and IRCTC processes them with the railway administration offline.

The money part: refunds and clerkage

Per Indian Railways' refund rules (revised with effect from 12 November 2015):

  • Unused RAC or waitlisted tickets can be cancelled for refund up to half an hour before the train's scheduled departure, with clerkage deducted. Clerkage is Rs 60 per passenger in reserved classes and Rs 30 for unreserved second class.
  • Fully waitlisted e-tickets after chart preparation are cancelled by IRCTC itself, with the refund credited electronically.
  • If the train itself is cancelled, e-tickets get an automatic refund and no TDR needs to be filed (in effect since 1 July 2015).

How to check where you stand

Your ticket carries a 10-digit PNR number in the upper left corner. Quote it at a computerised reservation counter, call the railway enquiry IVRS, or check the current status on the Indian Railways passenger enquiry site. Check it again on travel day: a WL 4 on Monday can be RAC 2 by Friday, and RAC is the difference between packing and moping.

Common questions

Can I board the train with an RAC ticket?
Yes. The Railway Board's reservation FAQ says so directly. You get sitting accommodation first and a berth if confirmed passengers do not turn up.

Can I board with a waitlisted e-ticket?
If it is still fully waitlisted after chart preparation, no. IRCTC drops your name from the chart, and boarding makes you a ticketless traveller under railway rules. The e-ticket is auto-cancelled and refunded.

Is RAC guaranteed to become a full berth?
No. RAC guarantees you can board and sit. A berth is allotted only if confirmed passengers do not turn up, so pack your patience along with your pillow.

What if some people on my ticket are confirmed and others waitlisted?
IRCTC says all names appear in the chart, including the waitlisted passengers. The confirmed and RAC passengers can travel as per their status.

Will my waitlisted e-ticket refund come automatically?
Yes, if it stays fully waitlisted after chart preparation. IRCTC cancels it and arranges the refund to your account electronically. Unused RAC or WL tickets you cancel yourself are refunded up to half an hour before departure, minus clerkage.
