Kutchi food is largely vegetarian, but the standard chutney has garlic and the khichdi comes with ghee. Here are the dishes, the questions to ask and the phrases that help.

Vegetarian food in Kutch is easy to find. What takes care is the detail: the chutney, the ghee and what "simple" means in a village kitchen.

1. What the official sources say

  • A Gujarat Tourism travel article says Kutchi food is simple and largely vegetarian. It names khichdi, kadhi, bajra rotla, a chutney of garlic and chilli powder, khaman dhokla and sabzi as the staples.
  • Incredible India's Kutch pages name Kutchi dabeli, kadhi-khichdi for breakfast, the Kachchhi thali and makai chevdo.
  • Incredible India's Rann Utsav guide describes the thali as bajri no rotlo, green chilli pickle, chhas, kadhi and semi-liquid khichdi with ghee, served with jaggery and ghee.

2. What to watch

  • The standard chutney has garlic. If you avoid garlic, say so before it lands on the plate.
  • The khichdi comes with ghee, which matters if you avoid dairy.
  • Dabeli is a street snack with several fillings and toppings, so ask what goes in it.
  • "Vegetarian" is not "Jain" or "no onion and garlic". We found no official list of places that cook that way.

3. Phrases to carry

  • "Bina pyaaz, bina lehsun?" (without onion and garlic?)
  • "Ghee alag se?" (is the ghee separate?)
  • "Isme kya kya hai?" (what is in this?)
  • "Pure veg kitchen hai?" (is this a pure vegetarian kitchen?)

4. Meal stops

We are not naming restaurants, because we could not verify any from an official source. The tent city and your stay will serve fixed meals. Ask them for the menu in advance, and ask if a plain meal can be made. On the Bhuj to Dhordo road, Incredible India says vendors sell dabeli at pit stops.

5. If food limits are strict

Tell your stay at booking, in writing, and carry dry snacks for the road. Do not rely on a verbal promise at a roadside stop.
