Ranthambore or Sariska for an Indian family: a plain comparison of transfers, access, budget and days

Both are Rajasthan tiger reserves. Official pages give distances, airports and some rules, but not accessibility details or Sariska fees. Here is the table of what is published, what is not, and how to choose.

The honest answer is that the two reserves suit different trips. Ranthambore is the one built around the safari. Sariska is closer to Jaipur and Delhi and sits in a district with other things to see. We compare only what the official pages say.

1. The table

Question Ranthambore Sariska
Nearest town Sawai Madhopur, park 14 km away Alwar, listed as about 30 km (Incredible India destination page) and about 36 km from the station (park page)
From Jaipur Airport 150 to 170 km from Sawai Madhopur, road about 180 km, about 3 hours About 107 to 110 km by road
From Delhi Not covered here About 200 km by road
Nearest station Sawai Madhopur Alwar Junction
Safari windows Morning 7:00 to 10:30, evening 2:30 to 6:00 Early morning and evening recommended, exact slots not found
Fees Indian adult Rs 215 per person per visit, jeep Rs 695 per vehicle per visit (notice valid 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2028) Not found on the pages we checked
Closed day Not found on the pages we checked Entry closed on Wednesdays
Accessibility Not published Not published
Other sights Ranthambore Fort, about half an hour by road Kankwadi Fort, reachable only by jeep, and temples

2. How to choose

  • If the tiger safari is the point of the trip, Ranthambore is the stronger fit. Sariska's own Rajasthan Tourism write-up calls it larger than Ranthambore, less commercialised, with fewer tigers.
  • If you have a short window from Jaipur or Delhi, Sariska is the shorter transfer.
  • If anyone in the family cannot do rough jeep rides, ask both reserves before booking. Neither official page says anything on accessibility.

3. Length of stay

This part is our judgement, not an official figure. Two safaris plus a transfer day is a reasonable minimum at either place. Add a night if you want the fort at Ranthambore or Kankwadi at Sariska, since fort visits eat a morning.

4. Budget bands

Only the Ranthambore fee notice and RTDC tariffs are published as hard numbers. Sariska fees were not found, so we will not make up a band. Ask your hotel for the current permit and jeep cost, and add taxis, rooms and food on top.

5. Check before you book

  • Safari booking for Ranthambore is on the forest.rajasthan.gov.in portal.
  • Confirm the Sariska closed day and slots with the reserve or the hotel for your date.
  • Confirm road conditions and the transfer time for your day of travel.
