A bassinet is a small onboard sleeping space for an infant, not a promise that every aircraft has one for every baby. Air India says bassinets may be requested free of charge on select flights, subject to availability and aircraft type. A request is worth making early, but it is not the same as a confirmed allocation.
How to request one
Air India's infant-and-child FAQ says you can ask at booking, at airport check-in, or through its customer support portal. Its Travel with Kids page also says you can request in advance while selecting your seat or by contacting customer service.
Give the airline your booking and specific flight details. Ask it to confirm whether that flight has a bassinet, whether your baby meets its requirements and what seating arrangement applies. The pages used for this article do not give one universal weight or height limit, so we do not invent one.
Check the actual flight, not just the route
Air India's programme page makes aircraft type and availability explicit. If you change flights or the aircraft changes, check the request again. Do not assume a bassinet request on one flight covers every flight on a connection.
The same page describes bassinets on long-haul journeys and elsewhere says select flights. Neither wording means every domestic or international flight has one. If another airline operates a segment, ask that operator about its own service.
Before departure
Keep the airline's response with your booking details. Ask what to do if no bassinet can be allocated, rather than building your plan around an unconfirmed request. At check-in, confirm the arrangement again.
This guide is about requesting the service. It does not set infant ticketing rules, give safe-sleep or medical advice, or approve a child seat or other onboard device. Ask Air India about those separate requirements before travelling.
Quick questions
Is the bassinet request free? Air India says bassinets may be requested free on select flights, subject to availability and aircraft type.
Does requesting guarantee one? No. Availability remains a condition.
Can I request before reaching the airport? Yes. Air India lists booking and customer support routes, and its programme page also mentions advance seat selection.
What is the universal weight limit? The pages cited here do not supply one. Ask Air India for the requirements for your flight and baby.
