October to March is not one uniform Rishikesh season. A trip in early autumn, a cold January stay and a March outing need different packing and pacing. Use climate to understand the broad pattern, then use the current Rishikesh forecast, warnings and activity instructions to decide what to do.
Checked on 30 October 2026. The numeric table below is IMD's Dehradun station climatology for 1991-2020, used only as a regional reference. It is not a Rishikesh station table, your hotel's temperature or a forecast for your trip.
A regional reference, with the station named
| Month | Mean daily minimum / maximum | Mean monthly rain |
|---|---|---|
| October | 16.3 / 29.0°C | 38.3 mm |
| November | 11.4 / 25.5°C | 5.2 mm |
| December | 7.6 / 21.7°C | 13.0 mm |
| January | 6.6 / 19.7°C | 43.5 mm |
| February | 9.2 / 22.5°C | 57.9 mm |
| March | 13.1 / 27.4°C | 45.8 mm |
Source: IMD Dehradun, 1991-2020 normals, not a separate Rishikesh measurement. Mean minima and maxima are monthly averages of daily values, not guaranteed daily limits. Monthly rain does not tell you which trip days will be wet.
The same IMD publication shows how much individual Octobers vary: Dehradun's October total was 0.2 mm in 2024 and 112.0 mm in 2022. Those examples are historical station observations, not predictions. A label such as "post-monsoon" cannot guarantee a dry outing.
October and November: do not pack for the afternoon alone
The regional table shows warmer daytime conditions than midwinter, with a lower November rainfall normal than October. That is a planning clue, not proof that every November day is clear or that a river activity will operate.
Pack layers that can be removed as the day changes, plus a practical rain option. Check the room's ventilation or cooling for your dates and the evening plan separately. A warm arrival afternoon does not settle what a riverside evening will feel like.
December and January: plan the room and the waiting
The Dehradun reference has its lowest mean minimum in January. For a Rishikesh stay, ask the actual property about bedding, hot-water arrangements and any heating you need, including availability and charges. A room photograph does not establish its winter comfort.
Keep an extra layer accessible for early departures and evening outings. With parents or anyone sensitive to cold, make waiting, seating and an easy return part of the plan. A town visit should not depend on spending a long time standing outdoors after the traveller is uncomfortable.
February and March: warming does not mean rain-free
The regional averages rise into March, but February and March still have measurable rainfall normals. Do not treat the whole October-March window as dry, or use warmer afternoons to dismiss an issued warning.
Choose a paced main outing and leave room to move it. A higher hill excursion has its own destination conditions; a Rishikesh town forecast should not be used as a snow, road or temperature forecast for a different elevation.
Check the actual forecast, not a screenshot without a date
IMD has a Rishikesh local-weather page. Check its issue date and forecast validity, and read the district warning for the actual route and stay. Missing observation values are not evidence that no weather risk exists.
Recheck near departure and before an exposed or river activity. If the forecast or an operator's safety decision changes, change the outing rather than defend a seasonal itinerary. This article intentionally does not embed a short-lived daily forecast as an evergreen promise.
Weather season and activity operation are different checks
A September 2026 ETV Bharat report described the rafting season beginning on 24 September. That is a dated season-opening report, not proof that a particular stretch or operator is running on your visit day. Confirm current permission, river conditions, participant requirements, equipment, service and cancellation terms with the actual operator. Do not buy a generic seasonal promise.
Likewise, a dry day does not reopen a bridge. A 22 September 2026 Hindustan report described Ram Jhula closed during deck work. No current reopening certificate was established here. Confirm the permitted crossing or road approach for your date rather than assuming a December works target is a guaranteed opening.
Aarti follows the day, not one year-round clock time
Parmarth Niketan says its Ganga Aarti starts at sunset and asks visitors to check reception for daily timing because it varies by season. Confirm the venue and route as well as the time. This does not establish reserved seating, a step-free viewing path or how much waiting will be comfortable for your family.
Our three-day plan with parents protects rest and the main visit without an assumed bridge crossing. Choose the season for the experience you want, then let current conditions set the day's detail.
Is this window worth visiting?
Yes, if the actual forecast, room comfort, access and the experiences you want fit your travellers. Choose October-November if you prefer the warmer regional pattern, December-January only with a suitable cold-weather plan, or February-March with layers and flexibility as conditions warm. These are choices informed by the reference table, not a ranking of guaranteed weather.
For rafting, a hill outing or a mobility-dependent ghat visit, settle the specific operating and access questions before making that activity the reason for a non-refundable trip.
