- Kuldhara
- About 18 km from Jaisalmer (Rajasthan Tourism)
- Sam dunes
- About 40 km from Jaisalmer (Incredible India)
- Tickets, timings
- No official rules found, confirm before you go
- Camping season
- October to March (Rajasthan Tourism)
Both fit in one day from Jaisalmer, but the day has a shape: ruins first while it is light and the walk is easy, dunes last for the sunset. The official pages do not give entry rules, opening hours or the distance between the two, so we will not invent them.
1. What the official pages say
- Kuldhara: an old town the villagers left in the 1800s, about 18 km from Jaisalmer (Rajasthan Tourism).
- Sam Sand Dunes: about 40 km from Jaisalmer, with camel and jeep safaris. Incredible India says sunrise and sunset are the highlights and mentions camping and evening music.
- Rajasthan Tourism adds that camel safaris at the dunes are mainly run by local camel owners, and camping is best from October to March.
2. A sensible order
- Leave Jaisalmer in the early afternoon, not the morning. Kuldhara is the nearer stop, so do it first.
- Get the sunset time for your date and be at the dunes before it, with time to walk and ride.
- Decide at the start whether you come back the same night or sleep at a camp. Returning after dark on a 40 km road is a driver decision, so ask.
3. The complications
- Tickets and timings: we found no official page for either. Ask your stay or driver, and do not assume the dunes have an entry gate at all.
- Transfers: the 18 km and 40 km figures are from the city. We have no official figure for the leg between the two sites, so ask the driver for the total km and the time.
- Cold: nights in the desert cool off fast in winter. We have no official night temperature for Sam, so carry a layer and ask the camp.
- Dune camp transfers: if you book a camp, ask whether the pickup, dinner and return drop are included and until what hour.
- Rides at the dunes are set by operators, so fix the camel and jeep rates first.
4. Questions to settle with the driver
- One price for the whole loop, with waiting time.
- Which stop first, and the latest time to leave the dunes.
- Where the car waits at the dunes.
