Three days in Kandy with parents: the temple, arranged help and an optional garden day

Keep arrival for rest, make the Temple of the Tooth the main visit and leave Peradeniya optional. Published assistance contacts and separate temple, museum and garden hours help avoid an exhausting checklist.

For three days in Kandy with parents, use arrival for settling in, put the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic on the main full day, and make Peradeniya's gardens an optional final-day choice. Do not turn the lake, temple and every museum into a compulsory walking circuit.

Checked 30 October 2026. This is a pacing plan, not a certified step-free itinerary. The temple publishes a special-assistance contact, but the working lift, complete route, toilet layout and assistance slot for your visit still need confirmation.

Before arrival: fix the transfer and hotel

Confirm your actual arrival point and hotel pickup, bags, comfort stops and full quote. A government notice dated 25 October 2026 suspended trains between Rambukkana and Peradeniya/Gampola until further notice; a later reopening was not established in our check. Do not plan an arrival at Kandy station from an old timetable. Ask the railway about the exact service and operating endpoint.

Ask the hotel about entrance steps, working lift, room location, bathroom, seated waiting and the vehicle drop-off. “We host older guests” is pleasant, but it does not answer whether your father can reach the room without stairs.

Day 1: arrive, eat and stop

Keep the first day free of timed attraction tickets. Settle in, have a meal and keep medicines, water and essential documents easy to reach. Add only a short outing if the family wants it and the hotel can explain a suitable approach and return.

Kandy Lake can be a visual pause rather than a lap to complete. This guide has not verified an unbroken step-free lake circuit, guaranteed seating or accessible toilets. Ask about a specific small section, nearby pickup and conditions; rest at the hotel if that is the better plan.

Day 2: the temple, with help arranged first

The temple's own FAQ says it is open daily 05:30-20:00 Sri Lanka time. It lists daily service periods of 05:30-07:00, 09:30-11:00 and 18:30-20:00. These are published worship times, not a promise of low crowds, queue length or access to every room. Ask which visit best fits your family and any assistance arrangements.

For visitors with special needs, the FAQ asks people to call the administration office on 0812234226 about transport from the main entrance and use of the lift. The contact page also lists +94 81 2234226. Call before fixing your day. Explain the mobility aid, unavoidable steps you cannot manage, seating needs, toilet access and how the return from the visit works.

At entry, expect screening. The temple asks visitors to hand over footwear, bulky luggage and non-essential items at the booths and wear respectful clothing; shorts, sleeveless and body-revealing attire are not permitted. Ask about any mobility-aid or footwear-related need rather than assuming an exception.

The FAQ publishes LKR 2,500 for SAARC visitors, the relevant category for Indian visitors. It says tickets are issued by the machines and unofficial tickets or fees are not valid. Confirm the current price, identification and assistance before paying.

Museums are optional, not a completion test

The FAQ's published ticket inclusions name the Temple of the Tooth, Dalada Museum, World Buddhist Museum, Tusker Museum and Royal Elephant Stable. Inclusion does not prove that every area is operating or accessible at your visit time.

The museum ticket page separately lists 08:00-19:00 for the World Buddhist Museum and Dalada Museum. Do not use the temple's wider hours as every museum's hours. Confirm today's rooms, last admission and accessible route. Select what interests the family, then leave time for lunch and a proper rest.

Day 3: a small garden visit, or no extra outing

The Department of National Botanic Gardens places Royal Botanic Gardens Peradeniya about 5.5 km west of Kandy. It is another transfer, not a lakeside add-on. Its page publishes 07:30-18:00 opening and 07:30-17:00 ticketing, so closing time is not the latest time to buy entry.

Make the gardens optional. Ask about the entrance, a short suitable route, seating, toilets and current battery-car availability and conditions if you need one. No buggy slot, complete step-free route or current admission quote was confirmed for this plan. Do not make the day depend on a cart you have not secured.

If departure is today, protect checkout, bags, the actual transfer and the flight or train buffer. A relaxed breakfast or no outing is a valid third day. You have not failed Kandy because you left one tree unvisited.

The checks that make this a family plan

  • Give every outing a shorter version and a clear way back.
  • Choose one main visit a day and keep meals and seated breaks in the plan.
  • Confirm the vehicle and approach, not just the attraction's address.
  • Let somebody skip an optional museum or garden without pressure.
  • Check current weather and travel notices before leaving; historical seasonal advice is not the day's forecast.

Sources and verification

Checked 30 October 2026. No assistance, vehicle, hotel, ticket or battery car was booked. Published facilities are not a live access inspection.

Questions on this article

asked by readers, answered by us

Is this a fully step-free Kandy itinerary?

No. The temple FAQ gives the administration number 0812234226 to ask about transport from the main entrance and use of the lift. Confirm the working lift, full route, toilet access and assistance for your visit before relying on it.

Do the temple and museums have the same hours?

The temple FAQ publishes 05:30-20:00, while the separate museum page lists 08:00-19:00 for the World Buddhist Museum and Dalada Museum. Check the rooms open today, last admission and the accessible route rather than applying temple hours to every museum.

Must we visit Peradeniya on the third day?

No. It is a separate transfer about 5.5 km west of Kandy. The published opening is 07:30-18:00 with ticketing until 17:00. No buggy slot or complete step-free route was confirmed. Skip it if rest, checkout or the return transfer matters more.
