Tirupati from November to February: separate rain, hill temperatures and crowds

Compare four months using IMD historical normals for Tirupati city and Tirumala hill. Keep a rain plan, check current warnings and confirm pilgrimage dates separately.

November to February is not one identical weather window for Tirupati. November and December need a real rain plan. January is historically much drier, while February brings warmer city afternoons. Choose the pilgrimage date and confirmed arrangements first, then use the season to shape clothing, transfers and how much outdoor time to attempt.

Checked on 30 October 2026. The figures below are historical IMD climate normals for 1991-2020, not a forecast for winter 2026-27. Tirupati city and Tirumala hill have separate stations and noticeably different temperature patterns. Neither a monthly average nor this guide confirms current road, footpath or temple operation.

November: do not call it a dry winter month

IMD's 1991-2020 table gives Tirupati a November mean daily minimum of 22.0°C, mean daily maximum of 30.4°C and mean monthly rainfall of 260.3 mm. Tirumala's corresponding values are 17.4°C, 24.3°C and 292.9 mm. These are averages across years, not a predicted daily range or rain spread evenly through the month.

The practical choice is to preserve transfer margin and a wet-weather fallback. Carry suitable rain protection and protect documents. Do not add a long exposed walk simply because a destination guide calls November pleasant. If an official weather warning or route restriction affects the day, revise the outing rather than trying to complete it for the itinerary.

December: cooler hill conditions, but rain is still part of the plan

For December, IMD lists city mean daily minimum/maximum temperatures of 20.0°C/29.2°C and 112.3 mm mean monthly rainfall. The hill station table lists 15.6°C/22.9°C and 147.8 mm. A traveller sleeping in the city and reporting on the hill should not pack from the city afternoon alone.

Use removable layers and rain protection appropriate to the forecast. Keep a dry change available where practical. Choose a room and transfer arrangement that make a wet arrival manageable, rather than relying on a long outdoor approach with luggage.

January: a drier historical pattern is not a crowd promise

January's IMD city normals are 18.8°C/30.3°C and 12.2 mm monthly rainfall; Tirumala's are 14.0°C/24.0°C and 5.3 mm. This makes January an editorial starting point for travellers who put a lower historical rainfall average ahead of warmer hill mornings.

It does not establish clear skies on a specific date or light queues. Religious events, holiday dates and actual booking arrangements need separate checks. Do not assume a generally drier month means you can arrive without confirmed darshan and decide everything at the gate.

February: retain the afternoon heat plan in the city

February's city mean daily minimum/maximum are 19.9°C/33.3°C, with 7.9 mm monthly rainfall. Tirumala's are 15.0°C/27.0°C, with 5.6 mm. City afternoons are historically warmer than in December, even though hill mornings may still call for a light layer.

Plan meals and rest around the reporting time you actually hold. Do not fill every daylight hour with outdoor transfers. Pack for the city and hill portions separately, and use the current forecast rather than treating the monthly minimum and maximum as guaranteed limits.

Why these numbers differ from older tables online

IMD also has an older Tirupathi page with a 1981-2010 climatological table. Its values differ from the 1991-2020 publication. This article uses the newer 1991-2020 tables consistently, specifically the Tirumala and Tirupati station pages, rather than mixing periods or substituting another station returned by a search.

The published source is IMD's Climatological Tables 1991-2020, printed station pages 379 and 380. Mean monthly rainfall is the average monthly total. It is not the amount that will fall during your three-day trip, and a low monthly value does not rule out an individual wet day.

Weather and crowds need different evidence

A climate table cannot tell you the crowd at the reporting point. Read current TTD notices for the temple and date you mean. Tirumala and Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Temple at Tiruchanoor are different places; an event notice for one must not be used as the other's entry schedule.

We have not verified a complete winter 2026-27 festival calendar or a date-specific queue forecast for this article. Do not reuse last year's festival dates. If a particular ceremony is the purpose of the trip, confirm its current official schedule and any special booking or transport arrangement before committing to travel.

What to book first

  • Resolve the pilgrimage arrangement. Check the official TTD portal for the actual category, date, eligibility, admitted companions and reporting instructions. A quota-release announcement is not proof that slots remain.
  • Fit transport around that arrangement. Include city-to-hill movement, not just the train or flight arrival. Allow room for weather and local conditions without promising a fixed transfer duration.
  • Confirm the room separately. Check its location, access, allotment or check-in/out period, meals and cancellation conditions. A room in Tirupati does not put you at the hill reporting point.
  • Add optional sightseeing last. Keep a way to drop it if rain, fatigue, transport or a changed pilgrimage plan makes it impractical.

The final checks before leaving

Check IMD's current forecast and warnings for the relevant area and validity period. Then check TTD's current notices and the actual transport operator's position. A weather warning, a road notice and a ticket status answer different questions; one does not replace the others.

If you intend to use a pedestrian route, verify its current operation and your own ability to undertake it. This article does not declare either footpath open, safe for all travellers or suitable for limited mobility. Keep an informed transport alternative rather than choosing a climb solely to reduce cost.

For the pacing around confirmed darshan, see our three-day parents' plan. For pricing the arrangements, use the couple's budget worksheet. The season changes the margins and packing, not the need to confirm the pilgrimage.

Sources and limits

No particular winter day, festival date, slot, queue length or route opening is guaranteed here. The seasonal illustration is imagined, not a live weather image.

Questions on this article

asked by readers, answered by us

Is November guaranteed to be dry in Tirupati?

No. IMD's 1991-2020 normals show November monthly rainfall of 260.3 mm for the city and 292.9 mm for the hill station. These are historical averages, not your trip forecast. Check current warnings.

Are Tirupati and Tirumala temperatures the same?

No. The separate city and hill stations have different normals. Pack for both parts of the journey and update the plan from the current forecast. Monthly values are not guaranteed daily limits.

Does January's drier pattern prove there will be fewer crowds?

No. Climate and crowds need separate checks. Read current event notices, darshan availability and reporting instructions for the actual temple and date. Do not reuse last year's festival dates.
