This is the choice between a lake city and a hill station. Both sit in Rajasthan and both are sold as family trips. They are not the same trip, and the transfer is where they differ most. We used only official pages, so where a number is missing, we say so.
1. Side by side
| Question | Udaipur | Mount Abu |

2. What each place gives you
- Udaipur: lakes, palaces and old-city lanes, and a base for day trips. Our other posts cover the airport transfer, a 3-day plan with parents and Sajjangarh.
- Mount Abu: Rajasthan's only hill station according to Incredible India. Dilwara Jain Temples and Guru Shikhar, the highest peak of the Aravalli Range at 1,722 m, are the headline sights.
- Rajasthan Tourism says the Sharad Utsav is held in Mount Abu in December. Check the dates for your year before you plan around it.
3. Transfers decide the trip
- Udaipur to Mount Abu by road is 163 km on one Rajasthan Tourism page and 165-170 km on Incredible India. Neither gives a drive time, so ask your driver.
- If you take a train, you get off at Abu Road and then add a 28 km taxi or bus climb. Taxis and buses run from the station according to Rajasthan Tourism. Fares are not published.
- Parents who get queasy on bends should know the last stretch is a hairpin climb.
4. Length of stay, as a rule of thumb
- Udaipur alone: three days fits a first visit with parents. See our 3-day plan.
- Mount Abu alone: the sights are few and spread out, so two days is a sensible starting point. This is our judgment, not an official figure.
- Both together: add the transfer to the total and treat it as a day of its own. Four to five days is more honest than three.
5. Budget bands
We found no official room, taxi or entry prices for either place, so we will not print bands. Build your own: get two hotel quotes in each town for your dates, one taxi quote for any Udaipur to Abu transfer, and add entry fees from the sites on the day. Compare the totals, not the headline rates.
6. A quick pick
- Choose Udaipur if you want flights, short transfers and gentler logistics for seniors.
- Choose Mount Abu if the family wants a temple-and-hill trip and does not mind the climb from Abu Road.
- Choose both only if you have four or more days.
